Dull Boy by Sarah Cross Review + Willow Winners

Summary: Superpowers are awesome – unless you actually have them, like Avery does. There’s only so much he can pass off as “adrenaline” before people start to get suspicious. Probably it’s best to lie low, so guys in white lab coats don’t come to carry him away, to find out what makes his freakish body tick. Who wants to be vivisected? But flying under the radar becomes a whole lot harder when you can actually fly. It’s dangerous to be different, so for now he’ll pretend to be normal, unremarkable Avery – a dull boy – anything to keep his secret safe.

What he doesn’t expect is the horrifying truth about where his powers came from, who else might have them, and the madness of one villain’s plan to turn this superpowered dull boy into something even more powerful and amazing.

Review: I finished this one a week or so back and I do apologize for the lateness…though it has nothing to do with the wonderfulness of this book. I absolutely loved Dull Boy. Every single character in this novel felt like a real person to me, with their own ideas and personalities as well as super powers if they happened to have them. Not everyone does of course and the reason for their super hero status was pretty cool, I must say.

Dull Boy starts off hooking you: why is Avery the way he is? Who are all these random people popping up in his life? How will he ever survive the school for troubled kids, which his parents have made him go too?

The book might look a bit thick at first glance but it reads really fast and you’ll find yourself trying to figure out one mystery after another. At the end of the book, I was happy to see some problems wrapped up and the backstory of these kid’s lives brought to light, but it still leaves you happily waiting for more…Sarah, when can we expect that?!

Overall, Dull Boy was a really fun and interesting novel. It’s fast-paced, filled with mystery and adventure, making it perfect for boys and girls, as well as readers who might be disinclined to pick up most books. Forget Kryptonite and radioactive spiders…Dull Boy is here to bring you a new brand of super hero, ready for the 21st century.
