Official Summary:
Review: First off, I just realized that Dan and Ed are from another book by Matt Dunn…The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook. If you want to read both, I’d start with that so you’re reading in order. However, I’ve only read Ex-Girlfriends United and it wasn’t quite what I expected.
I suppose I wanted more humor, and maybe the humor in this book just didn’t completely work for me. I did like it and it’s fun and can be funny. It’s always a good time to read a book from a male’s perspective, especially when it deals with their love lives. Matt Dunn has probably been compared to Nick Hornby, though I can’t say for sure…but it makes sense: they both write “lad lit” or books in the perspective of men that really show you what the opposite sex is thinking. I’m a huge fan of Hornby and I think I could like Dunn too, so I’m definitely going to give some of his other work a chance.
Really, I read this book a long time ago and I still haven’t written a review, which I apologize for, so I figured a quick review was better than nothing. Basically, it’s fun, it’s got some humorous moments, it’s interesting to see the inside of a guy’s head concerning romance and relationships, and I’m sure many people would enjoy it. It wasn’t my favorite, but it wasn’t bad.
A moment I did find particularly amusing is when Dan gets cast on a show called Close Encounters…his character’s name is Wayne Kerr…and he fails to notice what it really says. Put the words together: wanker. Which is an insult in England (where the book takes place, another positive! I like books in other countries).
Song Pick
I picked “Smile” by Lily Allen…one, she’s English so it fits the setting of the book and two, I figure this is a song that many of Dan’s ex girlfriends would enjoy!
Oh, Lily Allen! <3 I absolutely love your song pick for this review! Hehe, I think the lyrics will be perfect for any girl who is dumped by their good-for-nothing ex-boyfriends! x)
Guy-lit is always very interesting. I like seeing relationship and love from guy's POV, especially when I find out that guy's mind can be very different LOL! Glad that you fairly enjoyed this book. Brilliant review, Lauren! 🙂
This book looks so cute, Lauren! A website where you could read reviews about someone you’re thinking of dating? I think that'd be both epic and kind of intimidating at the exact same time LOL! x) It's too bad it's not as funny as you hoped, but it still sounds fun, and I always love getting the change of a male POV 🙂
Thanks for the awesome honest review, Lauren! <3
With a cover like that I would be expecting humor of the epic variety, so I'm kind of disappointed to hear that it's not that funny. Still, I'm glad you liked it.
I think I own the Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook . . . sad to hear this one isn't as funny as it could be.
Aw, I'm sorry it wasn't as funny as you wanted it to be but it does sound like an enjoyable book overall. It has a unique premise and sounds like a quick read.
Too bad this one lacked in humour as it certainly sounded like it wouldn't be short on laughs.
Thanks for sharing this book. It does sound like it fell flat, but I'd still like to read it. I enjoy male POV and I don't think I've read lad lit before (not that I can remember).
I read this and thought "Hilarious", too, so I'm disappointed to hear that the humor didn't really work for you.
I've never heard of this book but the premise sounds really funny. Sorry it wasn't as humorous as you would've liked, but it does sound like you enjoyed it anyhow. I would like to read something that is really from the male POV instead of a female writing a "male" POV. I'd like to know what goes on in their heads! Lol! Great review Lauren. 🙂
Very interesting sounding book. Sounds like something I might come across at the library and hopefully enjoy. I tend to really love books told from a male POV when it's done right! I'm like you though, this sort of book seems like it ought to be hilarious.
I wish that there was a site like that when I was in high school.
Thanks for review.

This seems like it would be hilarious. Oh well – still sounds cute though.
