Disney Dinner & A Movie: An Interview with Magical Moments Baking

Happy Friday, everyone! I mentioned in my Summer Staycation Gift Guide post that I was going to start sharing ways that we can all have a fun summer – even if we’re staying home. My friend Rachel puts on Disney Movie and Dinner nights for her girls, and I’m kind of obsessed. I’ll be sharing these throughout the summer – and maybe even after! For today, I want to introduce you all to Rachel!

1. What made you decide to do these Disney Movie and Dinner nights?

My husband and I are planning a surprise trip to Disney World in January. Our oldest daughter, Alice, has been a few times already, but this will be the first time for our youngest, Rose. Alice has already seen most of the movies but since Rose is only 2 (almost) she still has a bunch to see. I went through all of the rides and shows at the parks and made a list of all of the movies represented. We are doing one movie a week until we go.

2. What do your two girls think? Do they ask for certain movies?

Alice is enjoying it because she wanted to learn how to cook and each week we work together to create the menus and the food itself. She has chosen a few movies so far and when we don’t have a specific movie in mind I give her and my husband a choice. Rose is too young to really choose a movie but she does seem to really love Moana, Frozen, and Monster’s Inc.

3. How do you figure out what food to serve for each movie?

One of the first things I do when deciding on food is figure out what time period and location the movie is set in. I try to make culturally appropriate foods that would have been eaten when and where the movie takes place. My husband and I love food from all over the world but sadly our town is seriously lacking in any good, authentic ethnic foods so this is one way we can introduce new things to our daughters.

I also try to keep in mind what foods are in season, for instance, we won’t be doing Cinderella or Snow White until the fall when pumpkins and apples are more in season.

Alice likes to help me come up with fun foods based on characters and their costumes, specific props, or songs from the movies.

If I can’t think of anything or I’m missing a good side item, there is this awesome website that has a list of all foods seen in the movies themselves. The site also has some recipes for the foods. I wouldn’t have even thought to make Honey Cakes for the Sword in the Stone meal if I hadn’t checked this site: disneymeals.me

4. Personally, what is your favorite Disney movie?

My all time favorite Disney movie is Peter Pan. My 30th birthday party was a “Never Grow Up” themed dinner party so I’m going to try to make sure when we do that one that I don’t recycle menu ideas.

I also really love Brave and The Princess and the Frog. Merida and Tiana are so strong, powerful women that work hard and go after what they want in life. Being from the Deep South I am looking forward to making some soul food for PatF, but I have no clue what Scottish food to make for Brave. No haggis here!

Here are some photos from her Peter Pan “Never Grow Up” party!!

This is awesome! Well done Rachel and thank you for sharing this with us! I want to try something like this with my family now!

  2. I love this idea so much! My boyfriend and I make a point of visiting a Disney park every year. Last year, we were spoiled and got to visit both Disneyland in California and Disneyland Paris.

I’m still holding out hope that we’ll be able to keep the tradition alive and visit one this year!

  3. I absolutely love this idea and will be stealing it to do some Disney themed dinners with Zoe! I actually have a Disney cookbook my sister got us a few years ago that Zoe always gets out. We have only made one recipe so far, but this is a reminder to dust that off!

This is such an awesome idea. We love Disney here too. My husband and I worked there for 6 years. I think I will have to try something like this with my boys over the summer. They are still talking about our Disney trip from 2 years ago.

  5. Very nice interview … I do something similar, with Super Bowls. We make food from the cuisine of each city. Some (Seattle, salmon; Denver, brisket tacos) are better than others!

I love the girls’ princess-inspired names, too.
