If you have a book review, or book review round up post, that you want to share – please link up below! If you happen to think of it, I’d love for you to link back to my blog or use the image above so other people can join in. I’m a day early because I have a scheduled post for tomorrow, but My Month is Booked is typically the second Tuesday of every month.

I’ve actually read quite a few books since the last link up, but I have fuller reviews that I will be sharing throughout the month and into December. Today, I’m just going to share some mini reviews of other recent reads.

Time Will Tell by Barry Lyga

There are two timelines. The current one follows the POV of a couple teenagers who dig up a time capsule their parents buried back in the 1980’s. The second timeline is some of the teenagers in the 1980’s. I will say that it can be a bit tough keeping track of the people since there are two timelines and multiple POV’s.

Plus, I think it’s meant to be a surprise on who some of the parents are…because the 1980’s POVs are all either a mom or dad of a current teen, if that makes sense. It’s cool to eventually figure the connections out, but it can make it a bit confusing sometimes. The main point of the story though is that the time capsule contains a blood stained knife and a note saying they never meant to kill someone. Who put it in the time capsule? Who was killed back in the 80’s?

I definitely kept wondering and switching my answers as I read.

Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat

This is the first book in the Captive Prince Trilogy. As I write this, I’m in the middle of the second book. Captive Prince is about Damen, the rightful heir who is betrayed by his half brother and then sold as a slave to a neighboring kingdom. Nobody knows who he is in this kingdom, which is good, as he would surely be killed if they knew. Instead, he is the slave to the heir apparent, Prince Laurent.

I would definitely look up trigger and content warnings for these books, especially when it comes to consent. It doesn’t take over the book, but it is there. The rest of the book is about Damen adjusting to his new role in life, and trying to figure out how he can get back to his own kingdom. As time goes on, he finds himself more and more willing to fight for Prince Laurent, and I definitely liked learning more about Laurent. Fantasy, political intrigue, action/adventure. 4 stars for this one!

Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson

Taken from my Instagram post: It follows a group of women who grew up together and who also happen to be witches. πŸ§™πŸ»β€β™€οΈ ⁣
⁣
Times have changed though and they don’t all see the world the same- some are definitely more open-minded than others! ⁣
⁣
When a boy the oracles saw as bringing about destruction enters the picture, big questions are definitely asked. πŸ€”β£
⁣
Some of these women are angry, some are misguided, some believe in acceptance of all, and one in particular definitely does not. ⁣
⁣
The book started out a bit slow but it picked up pace quickly. I really fell in love with these characters and this world within our own. πŸ’™ There will be another book and I definitely need to know what happens next! ⁣

The It Girl by Ruth Ware

This is the second book I’ve read by Ware, and it was another winner for me. It takes place Before and After. Before and After April Clarke-Cliveden is found murdered in her dorm room at Oxford. Her friend, Hannah, is the one who found her, and who the book follows. Before, Hannah finds herself becoming a new person at Oxford and developing different friends, especially her roommate, April. After, Hannah is living far away from Oxford, married to April’s college boyfriend, and pregnant with their first kid. After, the person tried and convicted for April’s murder has died in prison – always pronouncing himself innocent. And now Hannah isn’t sure she got it right that night.

I really liked the dual timelines, being able to get to know April, Hannah, and the rest while at Oxford, and then following Hannah in the present as she wonders about who really killed April. I found it to be a good mystery overall, and I was really surprised by the ending. There were a couple things I had questions about and I wish were answered though.

Rare Vigilance by M.A. Grant

  • copy from netgalley

This is the first book in a trilogy, and I believe all books are out now. I’m doing Netgalley November where I try and get through some outstanding Netgalley books and this was one. I really loved this book; I actually read it all in one day. Atlas Kinkaid is a former marine who is now a personal bodyguard for his sister’s business. His newest contract has him protecting Christian Slava, who is more than just the son of a top businessman…he’s a vampire too.

Rare Vigilance is the start of a romance, but there isn’t much in this book. Instead, Atlas is learning about Christian and figuring out just what kind of person he is, while also trying to keep him alive from unexpected threats. Atlas is also dealing with a unique sort of PTSD after his time in the Marines, and I am definitely excited to learn more about both men in the second book.

As I said, I have a lot of other books that I’ve read recently (it’s been a good reading month) but I will be sharing my thoughts in other posts.
