Summary: This is a collection of various rap lyrics, complete with the name of the song and the artist’s name, with a wonderful summary from William of what that line is exactly about. What makes this book humorous are, of course, the summaries. They vary in length, but all of them sound very proper and sometimes clinical in manner.

Review:

This is definitely something I could see rap fans enjoying, whether they already understood the lyrics or not. Sometimes it’s nice to get a humorously written take on them. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge rap fan, but I do know various songs and enjoy some them…and it was fun to see the ones I recognized in the book, especially if I didn’t already understand the meaning myself.

Beyond what I knew though, it was still a fun book. It must take some work on Buckholz’s part to get a accurate (or as far as he knows accurate) take on these rapper’s words. I liked that the sections were divided, so you can check out Drugs and Alcohol or go to Places at the end if you wished. My favorite was the People section. I only wished it was longer. It was enjoyable because every lyric incuded (obviously) featured the name of a famous person, so it was fun to read through those.

I’m definitely adding my copy of the book to a gift for a friend of mine. She’s always loved rap and she should get a kick out of this. It’s perfect for eclectic music fans, so keep this on your list of possible gift ideas. Understand Rap is a definite stocking stuffer!! It’s a fast read, but a great coffee table book…just much smaller and handier than one!
