Publisher’s Synopsis: Sip Tea with Mad Hatter  makes learning afternoon tea manners fun, meaningful, and most important, memorable. Any adult or child who reads this book will delight in the clever illustrations and correlations of Alice in Wonderland’s characters to the manners advice.

Phrases like Be as cool as a Cheshire cat, Don’t be a mean Red Queen, and My teacup runneth over with gratitude are easy-to-grasp concepts for children.

With the demanding schedules of parents, caregivers, and teachers, the importance of social skills is often overlooked. Learning social skills early, especially during childhood, can shape a child’s character and greatly impact his or her life for the better.

The EW Foundation® (EWF) vision is to teach, inspire, and motivate children to perform spontaneous acts of kindness and consideration. The benefits they receive from simple, good behavior will be both tangible and intangible. Our belief is that children can “do well by doing good deeds.“

Review: Sip Tea With Mad Hatter is a really cute way to teach children about manners and treating others like they want to be treated – aka the golden rule! The book takes the classic children’s story Alice in Wonderland and identifies various characteristics in the characters that children should try to emulate or avoid. The overall idea is that a child is at a tea party – and it even includes some fun dance ideas and treats to make. Obviously these are all things that can be used elsewhere too.

Each page includes a bright, wonderfully detailed photo that shows each character’s trait. For example, one page is all about Alice and how she has confidence and courage. There are a couple paragraphs about how Alice may be small, but she stands tall when introducing herself. She also gives her first and last name when doing so. This type of information is on every page. It also includes some bullet points that specify what the child should have learned and utilize in the future.

One of the pages is all about the Mad Hatter and how he’s an excellent host. For the bullet points, some of them include-

  • Play games that can include every guest
  • Ask questions, even silly ones, and listen to the answers

This is a really fun book. It makes learning about manners and being polite to others enjoyable and easy to understand. I liked that the characters were from Alice in Wonderland, because most children probably know some of these already. It also breaks down the information in an easy to read and understand manner. Perfect for parents, teachers, and anyone else working with children!

  1. This sounds like such a great book! I am trying hard to teach my son manners so I think this book would be a great help with that!

  2. Aww, what an adorable book this is! Love that it teaches social skills to kiddos (and ways of throwing their own tea party). LOVE anything Alice, so happy to come across this post today and just entered the giveaway 🙂

  3. I’m always looking for great books to purchase as baby shower gifts when they do the ‘bring a book’ for the children’s library. This sounds great. I love the mashup of manners and classic.

Ironically, there’s a hat company around the corner from that’s called The Mad Hatter, and she sells these really neat hats made for tea parties, horse races and church. I love fun books like these that bring reminders of my childhood. Hugs…

  5. I loved Alice in Wonderland when I was younger! I even have an Alice themed diaper bag for Lucy and Penelope that my friend custom made for me. 🙂

  6. This looks like a great book to read with kids. It’s so important to teach children social skills instead of assuming that they are developing them on their own.

  7. I love the sound of this book! I like how you describe the skills it is teaching children, while helping them relate to characters they are already familiar with, so clever!

  8. One of the greatest teaching tools is to take something children are familiar with and apply it to the lesson. This is absolutely adorable for teaching children about table manners but even something as simple as having courtesy for others. I wish they had of gone with more traditional Wonderland illustrations but I supposed the Johnny Depp character is more recognisable. Wonderful review Lauren! <3 <3

This is such a great idea for a book! I dated a few boys that made me vow when I was a mother to teach my children some basic manners. It is sooo important 🙂

  10. Admiring the persistence you put into the blog and comprehensive info you present. It is great to discover a blog once in a while that is just not the same outdated re-written content. Fantastic read! I have saved your blog and I am including the RSS feeds to our bitcoin exchange website.
