Thursday Thinker: Why do you Comment?

Posted December 19, 2008 by shooting in Uncategorized / 27 Comments

I don’t know if this will become a regular feature as well, but I hope so! I’m hoping to start some new things and spruce up the blog a bit. Feel free to answer these questions/random thoughts in the comments or post it on your own blog and let me know you did!

So, my first Thursday Thinker is about blogs and the art of commenting. I’ve been on many blogs and noticed that some have a TON of comments for pretty much all of their posts, but while others rarely get any. Now, I know some blogs are more known then others…but I was wondering something…what makes you comment? Do you read a lot of blogs regurarly and always comment? Just read? If you do read something, do you always comment or tend not too?
For the bloggers out there…I know we all love comments, but what does it mean to you if people do or do not comment?

Any other thoughts? Feel free to share them. I’m curious!

*I’m so sorry for the delay in the new contests, for those that even knew they were coming! I meant to post one of them today, but I was gone for most of it, so it’ll be up tomorrow I’m sure. Let’s just say: three prizes, for all girls, different ages.*

  1. Hmm. I comment rarely. I probably SHOULD comment more often. Anyway, I usually read most of my posts under Google Reader at one time, so it’s hard to go to each one individually and comment. But if it’s something I have to say, I’ll take the time.

I also try and comment on people’s blogs who comment on mine. Doesn’t always happen, but I try.

  2. The more a blog post feels like a conversation, the more I comment. In other words, if I have something (hopefully intelligent)to say I will say it.

I also like to leave comments on posts written by friends just to let them know that I’m still around and reading their blogs.

I would guess that I comment on about half of the posts that I read. Of course some other posts just get a cursory glance (if I know the subject is not going to interest me).

  3. I have a lot of blogs in my google reader, more than 100 including yours. I read the post and if i feel like commenting, I do. There are 3-4 blogs that I regularly comment on though, mostly because they have becomne friends. Otherwise usually depends on the post.

  4. I usually don’t comment on nook reviews, unless it’s a book that I’ve read and I want to share my opinion. I guess I fell that I don’t have much to contribute.

I comment on contests, of course, but I usually try to write something other than “enter me!” because that probably bores the blogger after a while.

If there’s an interesting conversation thread, I will probably write something.

  5. I probably comment too much actually! It seems like a lot of the time I’ll go over to a book review and go “Oooh that book looks really good I want to read it!” because I do! So I’m wondering if I should cut back on those kinds of comments because I’m not really saying anything important you know? Good question! Can’t wait to see what others say!

  6. I try and comment on most of the blogs I visit because I think it’s nice to let the bloggers know someone was out there reading what they wrote! But it’s also hard to get to each blog individually too, since I have a list on my blog of which ones I read.

  7. I rarely comment, only when I think I have something to say or if something really struck me about the post. I need to do better though, because I really appreciate it when people comment on my posts.

But there are some people who regularly get over 100 comments a post and I have to think that might be a little too hard to keep up with.

  8. You know, it’s funny because I’ve recently changed my commenting habits. I used to just comment on the items that interested me. I, too, have 140+ blogs in my reader and it can get overwhelming.

But recently, I’ve decided to comment much more than I used to and the reason is this: I’ve come to value those blogs soooo much that I want to provide encouragement so they keep posting such great recommendations and reviews for me. So I’m commenting much more these days.

  9. I too like to leave comments so the blogger knows I’m reading! I definitely don’t comment on every post I see but a good number of them!

  10. Chelsea: I know what you mean about trying to comment on those that comment on yours. I always do try and keep up with those that pay attention to my own. 🙂

Alyce: That makes a lot of sense! Friends definitely get bumped to the top in a lot of ways! I always try and post something intelligent on people’s posts, but I do get that if I feel like I don’t have much to say, I’m not always going to comment.

VioletCrush: Like I told Alyce, once you become friends with bloggers, you really do often focus on theirs more!

ellie_enchanted: Very true, if it’s a book you haven’t read it, it’s sometimes hard to say anything beyond “sounds good” or “doesn’t sound good.” I like discussion threads as well!

Alea: I do the same thing, but I don’t think it’s bad! I like the bloggers to know if I’ve read the post a lot of the time and I figure if the author is reading the reviews, they might like to see what people think!

Sarah: Definitely! I was on yesterday trying to go and check everything I’d missed and it can be quite a lot to read and comment back too.

Brooke: It always interests me to see the posts that get a lot of comments, and somethings the post is simply a book review or something! It’s nice to see, but it can get a little impersonal that way I’m sure.
And I’m the same…I like to get comments on things, so I know how it must feel to others…hence, why I try and comment as much as I can!

Sharon: I love that Alea comments a lot as well! I’m always seeing her around. 🙂

Michele: There are so many blogs out there nowadays, it can get hard! I like that you are trying to encourage the ones you really love by commenting more. It’s definitely a nice thing to do!

EVERYONE: Thank so much for posting your thoughts about this! It’s really interesting to see the different views and ways of commenting that people have. I hope you’ll come back for the next Thursday Thinker, and of course, feel free to keep writing in here!
