The United States of Tara

The United States of Tara is a new show on Showtime. The premeire will air tonight (Sunday, January 18) at 10 PM ET/PT. I, however, do not have this channel. I wish I did, but sadly I do not. If you do have it though, you need to watch this show. I saw the very first episode and you can too on their website (be warned, viewer discretion is advised) and it looks amazing. I’m so upset I won’t be able to continue watching. The only thing that is pulling me through is that I’m GUESSING they will release the season on DVD later…or I hope they do, because I must watch this show somehow!

Anyway, if you aren’t sure what The United Sates of Tara is about….here you go: Tara (played by Toni Collette) is a wife and mother of two who has Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities, basically). Besides “Tara”, she’s also a biker dude named Buck, a homebaker mom named Alice, and a wild teen girl who goes simply b T.

Along with Toni, the cast includes John Corbett (Max, the father), Keir Gilchrist (Marshall, the son who is great. I’d love to see more by Keir), Brie Larson (Kate, the daughter), and Rosemarie DeWitt (Charmaine, Tara’s sister).

Based on the first episode, this show will be in parts sweet, hilarious, sad, thought-provoking, and interesting. The United States of Tara is brought to you by Steven Spielberg and Diablo Cody (who wrote some of the episodes, and wrote Juno, for those that don’t know who she is by name!)

Here is the shows’ trailer, for the very first episode. Again, there is an advisory on the show so just be warned if you’re younger…though, personally, I don’t think it’s that bad:

Anyway, that’s all I wanted to say. Does anyone have Showtime? Are you going to watch the series? Even if you don’t, have you seen the first episode or want to watch it now?

Nobody is telling me to post this…I just thought I’d get the word out there and see who knows about it and wants to watch.

  1. I watched the first episode too, on Netflix’s website last weekend! I too don’t have Showtime and am very excited for when it’s released on dvd!

  2. Yan: Yea, I first really heard about it from a magazine…it was an ad for the show. I like Toni a lot and the picture seemed great, so I was hooked on the idea then!

Alea: I know, they must release it soon after the season. I hate the idea of waiting.

  3. Hey, if you’re wanting to watch it, I know new episodes are aired on hulu.com. That’s where I catch all those kinds of shows that I can’t watch either (I’m a college student and usually have classes running until late at night).
Hope that helps! I’m gonna have to check out the show myself now.

  4. I'd forgotten that this was supposed to be on-thanks for the post 🙂

And the DVDs shouldn't take too long-Billie Piper's show came out last week & the second season's starting tonight (after Tara actually).

  5. Bookworm: Definitely, and it’s cool that it has a meaning behind it as well. It’s not just a funny comedy for comedy sake.

Diana: I do hate that it’s on a channel most people don’t or aren’t really able to get at the moment. If it comes out on DVD though, we’ll all get a chance!

Jessa: Thanks for the tip, good to know. If you catch this show, you’ll have to let me know what you think.

Book Spot: You’re welcome! And yay!! I’m excited. 🙂

    Ruth: Will do!

  6. I got a free screening ticket to go watch the first episode but I wasn’t able to make it so I gave it to one of my friends. She really liked it and will continue to watch the show.
Apparently it can be pretty darn sad. I think I might give it a shot, it’s not really my kind of t.v show so I dunno. I prefer funnier shows like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, my favorite show ever!! It makes my sides hurt because it’s just sooo funny.

  7. Robin: Aw, that’s a bummer you couldn’t go but I’m glad your friend was able too and enjoyed the episode.

I’d give it a shot. I’m sure it can be sad, but it does look like it’s a rather funny show…and a lot of comedies these days do mix the two.

I’ve never watched Sunny, though my brother loves it.

  8. Well, the last thing I needed heading into my final semester at college was another show that I’m engrossed in. However, I’m absolutely hooked! It has the promise of a great show!

  9. Jessa: hah I know how you feel. Sometimes you just need less distractions, but I’m really glad that you liked the show and hopefully it WILL be a good show throughout the season.
