Dixie is a social outcast of epic proportions, but that’s okay, because one day he will win the Pulitzer Prize for a journalistic assignment. In his sophomore year of High School, he thinks he’s found just the right one: drugs + football team=scoop of a lifetime. The only thing he has to do now is prove it, before he ends up being sent away for rehabilitation as everyone believes Dixie to be the true junkie.
Ben Esch’s debut novel is absolutely hilarious. Some of the instances are a bit too coincidental or lucky, but overall this is an amazing novel. Dixie might be the lowest of the low on the social ladder at his school, but he doesn’t let this get him down. He uses his crazy humor to see the bright side or simply make a joke that will have you forgetting how serious things are for him.
The whole cast of characters are unique and easy to distinguish, from Dixie’s school counselor Huggy Bear, his tormentor Rick, his brother Brandon, his love interest Brynn, to his menopausal newspaper teacher who Dixie gets stuck having to bring to the Homecoming Dance.
Sophomore Undercover was just released, and I’d definitely recommend it if you are looking for mystery, social ineptness, and absolute hilarity.
I want to read this after finding out Dixie is Vietnamese, lol!
