Shrinking Violet by Danielle Joseph
Review-Lauren

Summary: High school senior Teresa Adams is so painfully shy that she dreads speaking to anyone in the hallways or getting called on in class. But in the privacy of her bedroom with her iPod in hand, she rocks out — doing mock broadcasts for Miami’s hottest FM radio station, which happens to be owned by her stepfather. When a slot opens up at The SLAM, Tere surprises herself by blossoming behind the mike into confident, sexy Sweet T — and to everyone’s shock, she’s a hit! Even Gavin, the only guy in school who she dares to talk to, raves about the mysterious DJ’s awesome taste in music. But when The SLAM announces a songwriting contest — and a prom date with Sweet T is the grand prize — Sweet T’s dream could turn into Tere’s worst nightmare….

Review: I absolutely LOVE books that somehow deal with music or those that love it, and this definitely had a huge dose of that element. I loved the fact that Tere found her voice through radio, as I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be a DJ.

Tere is a very shy girl, and I related to her in that shyness. I’m not as bad about certain things, but I know the fear of getting in front of the class and speaking or having to meet and talk to new people. It’s tough sometimes, so it was great to connect with a new character on yet another personal level.

I would definitely recommend Shrinking Violet and I really can’t wait to see what else Danielle Joseph has in store for us. One of the things that I would compain about is the predictability about some things in the story, but as it’s a rather commen element in YA fiction, it’s not something most people will mind.

Overall, Shrinking Violet was a fun, very fast read with a lot of realistic characters and funny moments…as well as some wonderful messages about being yourself and using your voice!

  1. Aiya, Lauren. I so so so want to read this! Not least because I considered naming my daughter Violet. Was it you who held the soundtrack contest? I’ll have to go comb my Google Reader and see if I can find it.

  2. I am dying to read this! Enter me, please! (: I just love that music aspect.
(I posted the May contest thingy on my blog, BTW, does that count for an extra entry?)

  3. Nice, honest review. I don’t mind predictable elements as long as they’re done well and don’t pull me out of the story. Having been a “shrinking violet” in high school myself, I would be very interested in reading this one.

  4. Ooooh I want a copy of this so badly!!! Thanks for the awesome review, too. It’s good to know that it’s predictable, but I really relate to the main character and her situation. (Well, in that I became a better DJ… not that anyone won a prom date with me!)

I thought this book was awesome as well! So awesome that I really love to possibly own a finish copy~ And yeah it was predictable but that added to the cuteness factor for me 🙂

  9. It’s not fun being shy…=/
Which is exactly why I’m going to join the debate club next year…I thought it would work. I still get nervous in front of people I’ve known more than half of my life…

  14. I have yet to read a bad review of this, so once again I have to say that I need this book.

Although, to be honest, I will probably give any copy I win to a less-fortunate friend and buy my own copy. This is one of those books that I think would be worth buying.

Either way, I would love to win it, and my friend Justinne would also love for me to win it as well! 🙂

What a great review – and no spoilers! Thanks for the no spoilers!

Also, the cover model reminds me of Eve Myles. Very odd!

  17. This sounds like a very good book. I was painfully shy when I was in highschool so it would be a book I could relate to

  18. Did I really not comment on this before? I really, really stink then because this book sounds so good to me…and not only because listening to our radio here (not exceedingly far from Miami) I wish someone would come up with a great new FM radio station/show 😉

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

    Mike
