Gone by Lisa McMann

Review by: Lauren

Book Source: Publisher

Summary (from Amazon): Things should be great for Janie–she has graduated from high school and is spending her summer with Cabel, the guy she’s totally in love with. But deep down she’s panicking about how she’s going to survive her future when getting sucked into other people’s dreams is really starting to take its toll. Things get even more complicated when she meets her father for the very first time–and he’s in a coma. As Janie uncovers his secret past, she begins to realize that the choice thought she had has more dire consequences than she ever imagined.

Review:

Gone is the third and final novel in the Wake series and personally, I believe this was quite a good novel. Janie has a big decision to make and her thought process felt realistic for someone in her position who didn’t choose what life has given her, especially given that she’s a teenager.

Cabel is still a wonderful literary boy that I would love to date, but he is a little less perfect in this novel…and I felt this was good. Sometimes I hate how great guys in books seem because it doesn’t match up to a lot of people in real life. However, in Gone, Cabel is still a good guy who doesn’t want to upset Janie by voicing his worries but he’s a little more likely to snap and say the wrong thing at the wrong time…like guys, and girls, can do at times.

Just like the rest of the series, Gone is a fast read. There isn’t a lot of mystery to this one…beyond what Janie will ultimately decide. I did like that we got a new look into Janie’s mom beyond a drunk lady who happens to share the same house as our heroine. It gave us a way to feel more sympathy for this lady beyond the fact that she is sick.

Next part could be slightly spoilery!

It would have been cool if Janie and Cabel had another undercover mission, since the only one Janie was actually involved in occured during Fade. I can see why it wouldn’t have fit in the overall premise of Gone but a selfish part of me still wishes we saw a little more of that aspect of the series.

Overall, I did enjoy Gone and I’m sad to see the end of Janie’s journey. I’m really glad that Lisa McMann has a lot more books ready for us…it’ll be nice to see something new from her for the first time! I can’t wait!!

I really like this series because I've always found dreams fascinating. They're so unique, unusual, and just plain weird. The first book is my favorite: I read it in one sitting.

    Thanks,
