Subscription September: Letters in the Mail from Authors

Posted September 5, 2015 by shooting in Uncategorized / 18 Comments

In place of this weekend’s Getting to Know, I wanted to share another subscription service. This one is perfect for all you book lovers -and any children in your life that like books too!

This subscription service is two parts: Letters in the Mail (adults) and Letters for Kids (children, of course) and the idea is that you get two letters a month from authors.  This is a really cool way to find out about new-to-you authors as well. I’m not supposed to post any pictures of the letters, which I completely understand, but I was sent a mix of adult and kid’s letters from the past to look over.

These are all really cool – some authors (like the children’s author, Sara Varon) have illustrations, some include photos, etc. This is definitely a subscription service I would recommend trying out. The month-to-month price isn’t bad at all if that’s where you want to start (prices below). I would love to subscribe my niece to this, but she still has a couple years before she’d really enjoy it!

Wendy, who helps handle the letters, says:  The
letter is written and signed and includes an address for subscribers to
write back to. The letters are then printed and mailed out.  The
authors love to get letters in response and most of the authors will
respond with personal notes to people who write them although for
obvious reasons we can’t guarantee that.

If you have a question about either of these subscriptions, please contact Wendy: wendy@therumpus.net

Letters in the Mail: This subscription service is for adults, so I’d say teens and up might be interested!

  1. Oh how cool! I've never heard of this one before. Just the other day, I was thinking about this dying breed of communicating, that I wish I still get snail mail from time to time. This is a great idea!

  2. It would depend on what the letter's are about for me. I have the fear that it would be a load of Indie authors who are using the service purely for self promotion and letters are mass produced and all about their latest book. I know with privacy they won't let you show it, but if you don't name the author, are you allowed to discuss it? I love this idea, like a one way penpal. Would be awesome to have something like this between bloggers actually, connecting to other readers in different countries and forming friendships. I Hopefully one day they'll expand. Thanks for sharing Lauren, I love how unique all of these subscription services are.

  3. Hi! I'm the program administrator for Letters In The Mail and Letters For Kids. Each of our author's letters are unique and topics are wide-ranging. We ask that authors not use the letters as a tool for self-promotion. You can find a list of past and upcoming letter writers at http://www.therumpus.net/letters or on FB http://www.facebook.com/RumpusLITM. Since the goal of Letters For Kids is to promote reading, the authors will mention a book (usually in the p.s.) so that the children can go to the library and read it. But the letter is not about the book. To see a list of past and upcoming letter writers and two sample letters, visit http://www.therumpus.net/kids and on FB http://www.facebook.com/RumpusLFK. Happy reading!
