My Word of 2017

Posted January 3, 2017 by shooting in Uncategorized / 23 Comments

Instead of creating set New Year’s Resolutions, a lot of people choose a word that they want to keep in mind to define the coming new year. I’ve heard of this tradition a couple years ago but it wasn’t something I did myself. I always have goals and “resolutions” I want to work toward, but after reading someone else’s post on their 2017 word, I realized that there was a word that sums up how I see my 2017 going:

Perseverance

According to Dictionary.com, this word means: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement.

While this word is probably suitable for most people, I really think it’s a good one for me to keep in mind as 2017 goes on for a few different reasons.

1. One of my lifetime goals is to publish a novel, so I really want to spend more time working on my own writing and hopefully get closer to finding an agent/publishing a book. I’ve been really lax with my personal writing, so I need to persevere!

2. I like the job I currently have, but it’s only part-time and I really need to find a full-time job. I need to keep looking, applying, and hopefully find something this year that’s full-time and I enjoy.

3. I know a lot of people have some type of fitness goal as a new year resolution, but this is something I’ve been working on for many years, and it just isn’t happening. I’m looking into a program that helps get you on a healthier path and holds you more accountable, and I’m hoping that it all works out for me to start sometime soon. It will definitely take a lot of perseverance throughout the year, but it’s something that needs to happen so that I’m not only healthier for the long haul, but also happier in the long run.

There you have it – three things that I need/want to work on this 2017 and the word that encompasses it all: Perseverance!

What’s your 2017 word?

  1. Perfect word choice from what you shared. This is the first year I haven't chosen a word of the year yet and still up in the air on what I would choose myself. But definitely hope this year is a great one for you and Happy New Year now!! #happynowlinkup

  2. What a great word for 2017.

Like yourself, some of my other blogger buddies are sharing their word of the year and whilst I've spent lots of time pondering what my word might be I've yet to settle on any one word.

  3. I've been wanting to join in on this ONE word thing too and my word hit me on the last day of the year when I was wondering what could help drive me throughout the year. And I came up with FIERCE. =) Reminding myself to go forward and keep moving with determination and to be relentless with myself on not settling.

Great post! And love your word too! #happynowlinkup

  4. What a great post. I havent' heard of the word of the year before. I hope you do perservere and reach your goals! I think my word of the year will be Hope. I am hoping for a better year and I have hope for the future after a turbulent year. I hope it gets better from here.

  5. Great choice, Lauren! I like the idea of choosing a word to focus on throughout the year rather than individual goals. Hopefully the focus of the word will in turn help with everything else!

  6. That's really awesome to pick a word instead of a bunch of goals!! I LOVE IT. I mostly do a checklist of things I'd like to complete, eeep, but the "word of the year" is still such an awesome idea. I hope you do well with finishing off your writing and going for the next stage of querying. *cheers for you in the background* And good luck with the job hunting too!! These are all pretty huge goals so I hope they work out for you. HAPPY 2017!!

  7. Yay! That was my word for all throughout med school, and I think I'm gonna let it carry over through residency too! ๐Ÿ˜› It's a good one!

Best of luck to you on your novel–you can do it!

  8. Such a perfect word! I love that you chose a word that isn't fluff. It takes perseverance to succeed at just about anything. Happy New Year and thanks for joining us at the #happynowlinkup!

  9. Well done on choosing your word of the year. I have never done so myself – instead keeping to the standard resolution list – but I definitely see the appeal in choosing just one word that describes how you want to live your year and sticking to it. It seems to work for people and I could see myself trying it out some year. Perseverance is a good one, especially when you break it down into categories and how you want to overcome those challenges, move outside your comfort zone, to complete your goals. Wishing you all the best in writing, job hunting, and fitness this year!!
