The Book Vs. The Movie
In honor of It Started With a Book Week….I will talk about About A Boy by Nick Hornby, with a film starring Hugh Grant.
I saw the movie for the first time in about 7th or 8th grade. I highly enjoyed it, though my family wasn’t too into it….meaning I haven’t seen it in quite awhile. However, around my freshmen or sophomore year in high school, I finally read the book. You see…I didn’t know it was a book for awhile until I read another book by Nick Hornby, the author. I think this is the case for a lot of books/movies. You might read a book or know of it and fail to realize it has a movie…but more often, we go and see films that we never figure out are books, at least not for awhile.
I’m usually happy when I find out a movie is a book, mainly if I liked the movie of course, because it means I get the broader story. Movies are great, but books are better. That’s my opinion at least.
When it comes to About a Boy, I really did love the movie, as I said above, and I still do….but again, the book is better. A lot of the movie was changed and for one thing, the book has more of the relationship between Marcus and Ellie, which I really enjoyed. If you’re a fan of Kurt Cobain, you’ll probably relate too or understand a lot of the emotions near the end.
Finally, I leave you (well, before the movie’s trailer) with a little fact of information for all you Harry Potter lovers. Ellie, from About a Boy, is played by Natalia Tena…who plays Tonks in the Harry Potter films.

I love that movie, but have yet to read the book. Cool that Tonks is in the movie-I hadn’t even put that together, which is sad considering how much time I spend on IMDB…

I know what you mean. I’m on IMDB all the time. I don’t remember how I first found out she played Ellie in the movie, but it is cool to see her now.

Huh–I didn’t realize that was Tonks! I love the movie and recently picked up the book (don’t usually do that, but I had good luck with High Fidelity). Maybe next year I’ll actually get to read it…

I had also seen the movie first, and I loved it. But after reading the book I was deeply disappointed with how the movie turned out. I couldn’t even fathom why they changed so much of it. But I do like that it is more ‘about a boy’ than the book is.
