Five Feet Apart: A Movie Review by Lauren
Five Feet Apart, based on the book of the same name, came out earlier this month. It’s been on my radar, but I wasn’t necessarily planning on seeing it in theaters. However, a friend of mine asked me last week if I wanted to “go see Five Feet Apart and cry” and so I did. And yes, I cried. Haley Lu Richardson (Stella) and Cole Sprouse (Will) play teens with Cystic Fibrosis; they are both currently staying at the hospital for treatment and slowly strike up a friendship…and then more. Except, people with CF aren’t supposed to touch each other – in fact, they are meant to stay six feet apart. The title Five Feet Apart comes from Stella’s eventual idea that she wants to steal back one foot, since CF has stolen so much from her. Obviously, being unable to touch each other, it’s equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking to see Stella and Will together.
Five Feet Apart: A Movie Review #ontheblog #fivefeetapart Share on XI thought both Haley and Cole did an amazing job though; I definitely felt for their characters, and I even understood their motivations when they sometimes did reckless things. Something I was excited about during the movie was seeing secondary characters played by actors that I really loved, like fellow CF fighter, Poe, played by Moises Arias (Hannah Montana, The Middle). There was also Nurse Barb played by Kimberly Hebert Gregory (Kevin – Probably- Saves the World), and Dr. Noor Hamid played by Parminder Nagra (Bend it Like Beckham). I really appreciated that a lot of the other characters were diverse in race and sexuality. It made this world within a hospital feel more real, and of course, it’s difficult not to feel connected to the characters as they face uphill battles left and right.
So yes, I really enjoyed Five Feet Apart. I probably won’t read the book, but I do recommend the movie if you’re interested! Just bring tissues if you’re a crier!
Have you seen Five Feet Apart yet? Are you planning to? Have you read the book?

I had no idea what this movie was about, and it definitely has more appeal to me now. It sounds like it would be appropriate for tweens, but I’ll take a look and see.
I’m going to see this on Saturday with some friends for a late birthday get together. It’s that or Dumbo and frankly, my depression meds can’t handle either. ?
I haven’t been that interested in this one, but glad tou enjoyed it!
Gabbie and her friends went to see that!
oh I didn’t know it was a book! I’ll have to read it then! Love the theme and the diversity! Great review 🙂
I’ve been curious about this movie, but I wasn’t aware it was a book until recently. I’m familiar with Cole Sprouse because of Riverdale, which is what initially caught my attention. I love the idea of them stealing one foot back, and I hope this movie has more happiness than sadness! Although, I have a feeling I would cry nonstop. 😉

Oh gosh, I am sure this movie is a terror jerker. My kids both have asthma and this is a common test they do with younger asthma patients. I’d like to see this when it comes out on video!

Ooh, I so want to see this. I’ll probably wait until it’s out on DVD though.
I didn’t know what this was about so I’m glad you shared! I didn’t know it was a book too! I might want to check out the book first and then see the movie, we’ll have to see.
I think I’d bawl through the whole movie. It does look really good, though. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I haven’t heard of this book OR this movie! It sounds interesting though, although I’m sure it’s heartbreaking in many ways.
Oh wow, I want to see this but may wait for it to come out on DVD so I can cry at home instead of out in public, lol.
I haven’t seen the movie or read the book, but I did see 2 kids suffering with this disease on Chicago Med the other night, and they couldn’t be in the same room. Ironically, and sadly the guy ended up being terminal and he couldn’t get a transplant, allowing her to get it instead. As he lay there dying she kissed him and left her scarf, and you already know I was blubbering like a fool.(lol) But I’m a sucker for a good romance, so of course, I’ll be checking out the movie. Happy Friday and Hugs…RO
I am going to see this movie! I have a friend who’s husband has CF. We thought he was dying 5 years ago, but is a real inspiring hero!
I want to see this based simply on their casting of Cole Sprouse! 🙂
I really meant to read the book before I went to see the movie, but never got around to it. I went and saw the movie and like you I really liked it. Definitely cried!
I read the book, it was entertaining but nothing too special. I’d like to see the movie but will probably wait until it comes out on a streaming service. 🙂 XO – Alexandra

I haven’t read the book but thanks to you review, I may catch the movie eventually. Glad you liked this adaptation.
I probably won’t make it to the theater to see this one but I hope to catch it later.
Okay you had me when you said you cried because I LOVE a cathartic cry but then PARMINDER NAGRA!? I haven’t seen her since ER! Bend It Like Beckham is one of my favessss! And I wouldn’t turn down a chance to see Cole Sprouse either tbh. I am so glad it was good, I definitely want to see it at some point!
Sounds like a good movie, but I’ll probably watch it at home on DVD. I hate crying in theaters!
I have heard really good hings about this movie and its bookish counterpart! I know a bunch of people have seen the movie and gone on to love the book so maybe it’s worth a try if you’re up for reading a story like this one. I’m quite interested in seeing it since YA movies are ones I mostly enjoy. I have no idea if this one will have an Australian cinema release, though. Even if it does I’ll likely wait until it’s on DVD because of my tinnitus, sigh.
So glad you enjoyed it, though, Lauren! I love movies that surprise us 🙂
