Glossies Made Me Do It: Two Magazines, Five Books

Posted March 3, 2017 by shooting in Uncategorized / 29 Comments

It’s time for the March edition of Glossies Made Me Do It, where me, Ashley, and Erika share what we are loving from one of our magazines this month! Want to join us? We have a link up below!

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile now, then you know how much I absolutely love to read. I get recommendations from all sorts of places, but sometimes that includes magazines! For March, I thought I would share 5 books that I have found in March issues that are going on my wish list! Four are from Oprah and one is from Redbook. Remember, two U.S. winners can get a subscription to Oprah magazine by entering here. It ends March 8th!

Every month, Oprah Magazine has pages of book reviews and recommendations and I love seeing what books are coming out soon. For the March 2017 issue, I found four books that I absolutely must read.

Lincoln In the Bardo by George Saunders

Add on Goodreads

SummaryOn February 22, 1862, two days after his death, Willie Lincoln was laid to rest in a marble crypt in a Georgetown cemetery. That very night, shattered by grief, Abraham Lincoln arrives at the cemetery under cover of darkness and visits the crypt, alone, to spend time with his son’s body.

Set over the course of that one night and populated by ghosts of the recently passed and the long dead, Lincoln in the Bardo is a thrilling exploration of death, grief, the powers of good and evil, a novel – in its form and voice – completely unlike anything you have read before. It is also, in the end, an exploration of the deeper meaning and possibilities of life, written as only George Saunders can: with humor, pathos, and grace.

I Want to Read Because: I’ve read a book of short stories by George Saunders, called Tenth of December, so I already know I like his writing. This book just sounds absolutely intriguing and very unique. I don’t really do audiobooks because I have a hard time focusing, but I’m really tempted to try this one because it has a very large cast – including many famous names!

If you’re interested, you can buy it on Amazon now (I’m an affiliate – I get a small percent of any sale).

The Big Life: Embrace the Mess, Work Your Side Hustle, Find a Monumental Relationship, and Become the Badass Babe You Were Meant to Be by Ann Shoket

Add on Goodreads

Official SummaryThe Big Life is packed with actionable guidance combined with personal advice from high-profile millennial women who have already achieved tremendous success, plus intimate conversations with a cast of compelling characters and Shoket’s own stories on her quest for The Big Life. You’ll learn to tackle all of the issues on heavy rotation in your mind such as:
· How to craft a career that’s also a passion.
· How to get respect from a boss who thinks you’re a lazy, entitled, and self-obsessed millennial
· Why you need a “squad” of people who support you as you build your Big Life
· How a side hustle will make you smarter, hotter, and more in control of your destiny.
· Why work/life balance is a sham and your need to embrace the mess.
· How to find a partner whose eyes light up when you talk about your ambition.

I Want to Read Because: First off, I really like nonfiction/self help type of books because I find them really interesting and it’s nice to see if there are some things in the book that I can utilize in my life. This book sounds great because it’s focusing on the “millenial” generation which I’m lumped in with – and it’s not always a positive thing – so I’m curious to see what Shoket has to say about making your way in life at this particular age. Also, she used to be the editor-in-chief at Seventeen magazine, which I subscribe to and love, despite not being a teen anymore.

The book comes out on March 14, but you can pre-order on Amazon now (again, I’m an affiliate – I get a small percent of all sales).

On Turpentine Lane by Elinor Lipman

Add on Goodreads

Official Summary: At thirty-two, Faith Frankel has returned to her claustro-suburban hometown, where she writes institutional thank-you notes for her alma mater. It’s a peaceful life, really, and surely with her recent purchase of a sweet bungalow on Turpentine Lane her life is finally on track. Never mind that her fiancé is off on a crowdfunded cross-country walk, too busy to return her texts (but not too busy to post photos of himself with a different woman in every state.) And never mind her witless boss, or a mother who lives too close, or a philandering father who thinks he’s Chagall. When she finds some mysterious artifacts in the attic of her new home, she wonders whether anything in her life is as it seems. What good fortune, then, that Faith has found a friend in affable, collegial Nick Franconi, officemate par excellence . . .

I Want to Read Because: I’ve never read anything by this author, but I read a review for this one in Oprah and it just kind of stuck out to me. I’m really curious about the character of Faith and I love the sound of all the secondary characters in her life!

This book is out now and you can get it on Amazon here (I’m an affiliate – I get a small percent of all sales).

Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama

Add on Goodreads

Official SummarySix Four. The nightmare no parent could endure. The case no detective could solve. The twist no listener could predict.

For five days in January 1989, the parents of a seven-year-old Tokyo schoolgirl sat and listened to the demands of their daughter’s kidnapper. They would never learn his identity. They would never see their daughter again.

For the 14 years that followed, the Japanese public listened to the police’s apologies. They would never forget the botched investigation that became known as Six Four. They would never forgive the authorities their failure. For one week in late 2002, the press officer attached to the police department in question confronted an anomaly in the case.

He could never imagine what he would uncover. He would never have looked if he’d known what he would find.

I Want to Read Because: First off, I love novels that come from other countries and/or are translated, and this Japanese thriller obviously falls into that category. It sounds so fascinating. After I read the review in Oprah, I knew I just had to read this one. According to Goodreads, it’s 576 pages, but that’s alright! It would make a nice read for the summer time I think, especially since it focuses on such a dark topic.

The book is out now and you can get it on Amazon here (I’m an affiliate: I get a small percent of all sales).

Now we have the March 2017 issue of Redbook. The book that I’ve added to my wish list from this magazine was briefly mentioned near the end of the issue, under the At Home section.

Whole New You: How Real Food Transforms Your Life, for a Healthier, More Gorgeous You by Tia Mowry

Add to Goodreads

Official SummaryWhen actress Tia Mowry landed her breakthrough role on the sitcom Sister, Sister, she swapped home-cooked meals for catering spreads. But her teen-dream diet of candies and carbs turned into a nightmare when she developed endometriosis, a painful disease that affects one in ten women worldwide. Two years and two surgeries later, some surprising advice from her doctor inspired Tia to radically change one of the most basic elements of her life: her diet. After ditching the dairy and the refined sugars and processed foods, Tia’s pain receded drastically. What’s more, her migraines stopped, her skin cleared up, and she was finally able to get pregnant. Drawing on the latest research on whole plant foods, inflammation, and gut flora, Whole New You chronicles Tia’s journey to wellness and provides all the resources you need to feel better, including
– a ten-day menu plan to begin your healthy life
– more than 100 delicious recipes
– lighter versions of your favorite comfort food recipes, including “Buttermilk” Fried Chicken and Crispy Collard Chips
– healthy recipes for your kids
– tips and tricks for eating on the go
– complementary approaches, such as acupuncture and yoga, for whole body healing

I Want to Read Because: I’m on a diet program through my local hospital so I’ve been really interested in cookbooks and other things that I can find that focuses on living a healthy life. That’s one reason that this book really appeals to me. I’m also a big fan of Tia Mowry and I like watching her cooking show, so I think it will be an enjoyable read, even if I don’t implement everything into my own life.

This book comes out on March 14, but you can pre-order on Amazon here (I’m an affiliate; I get a small percent of all sales).

  3. OMG! Thank you! You know, I'm always looking for a few good reads that Tia books sounds totally up my alley…. as does the one providing guidance for millennial women (not in that category myself but I've been on a self-help book kick, and they're becoming some of my favorites to read!)

  4. RO

Like you, I really get into self-help and motivational books, and I love how many magazines are focusing on some really neat recipes. I've seen Tia on the Cooking Show and as a judge on cooking programs and love her positive demeanor and big smile. Great post! Hugs…

  5. I am so bad about reading books. That's why this link party appealed to me. I read magazine articles all the time because they are short and quick and fit more into my time. Thanks for hosting the linky and I sure hope it continues to grow!

  6. Six Four sounds fascinating! I think I'd like Tia Mowry's cook book as well. I'm always on the look out for healthy, lower calories recipes. Thanks for all the great suggestions! 🙂

  7. Ann Shoket's book sounds pretty darn interesting! (I love a good self-help book too!) And perhaps most importantly, didn't she used to appear on America's Next Top Model?!? hahahaha

  8. I just heard about Lincoln in the Bardo and thought it sounded intriguing–I'll have to add that to my list! Six Four also sounds like a good one!
