You might remember that I recently wrote a post about 4 Interactive Books for Young Readers, and I included Mightier Than the Sword by Drew Callander and Alana Harrison. Well, today, I’m back to share a book review of the sequel, Mightier Than the Sword:  The Edge of the Word.

Official Summary: The second book set in Astorya places you back in the driver’s seat. You’re a real human being (we assume), and in this fictional world, that makes you a superhero. Armed with your trusty pencil, you have the power to create. What you write, draw, or scribble in the book becomes part of the story!

You must journey to Astorya’s Other Side, a place of monsters and mayhem, to hide the Original original forever. Surely nothing bad could happen to Astorya’s precious document there, right? But when the plan goes awry and digital doppelgangers are unleashed on the world, once again only you can save the day.

Review: First off, this is such a fun book. It’s told in the second person – so YOU are the main character. It puts the reader in the driver’s seat, if you will. Not only that, but there are moments throughout the book where you can help write (and draw the story). Remember those assignments where you get a paragraph, but various words and phrases are missing? Under the empty spot, it will say Noun or Adverb, etc. You fill them in with whatever you want and then you read back the paragraph and it’s usually something a bit goofy and fun. Well, there are a few of those throughout the book – allowing the reader to write in their answers and help direct the story. There are even spots to add your own drawings.

I love that this lets you write in the actual book and help create what happens. It’ll be different for every reader, and isn’t that the whole point of reading and using your imagination? After all – the pen is mightier than the sword. Or, in this case, the pencil, as that’s what You use to help write and draw the story. Plus, using an actual pencil to fill in the book helps young readers tackle any mistakes or changes without worry!

Mightier Than the Sword: The Edge of the Word is a fun read. It’s very unique and imaginative. It’s fantasy, but it also deals with real lessons of being true to your friends and not letting your “red thoughts” (aka bad thoughts everyone has sometimes) direct your actions. I loved all the various characters and how unique they were. And don’t tell your kids – but there’s a lot to learn in this book too. There’s obviously all the adverbs, adjectives, etc. that they have to think of, but there are French words and phrases throughout (with a Glossary in the back). Plus! There’s a crossword puzzle – that’s integral to the story.

The book wraps up by the end, but it does leave just enough to make readers excited to see where the story goes next…and to help that story come alive!
