Movie: The Apparition

Review by Lauren

IMDB Summary: A couple are haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a college experiment.

Review: It’s weird…I would normally say I’m not that big of a horror fan, which is true. I get freaked out easily and I have an over-active imagination, which never helps. However, there are some films that are a bit more scary or freaky and I love them. After all, one of my favorite films is Cry Wolf and that’s about murder (and more realistic murder at that).

What does this all have to do with The Apparition? Well, I expected it to be a bit scarier, to be honest. It’s not a realistic film, which is good for me. I don’t have to leave the theater worrying this can actually happen. But I walked into the theater expecting to be a bit freaked out, possibly even jump here and there, and that’s kind of the test of a horror flick…or at least a movie that comes across as being somewhat frightening. But The Apparition kind of failed at that. Neither me nor my sister jumped at all during the film and we left it feeling a bit let down in some ways…it could have been a great premise, but it just fell flat. Most of the movie, apart from the very beginning and near the end, seemed to be about Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) as a couple. It didn’t really make sense to me. I guess I just expected more.

I will say that one of the big reasons I wanted to see this movie was for Tom Felton, who played Patrick, the guy who helps Kelly and Ben understand just what is happening to them. I’m a fan of Felton’s and it’s nice to see him in parts vastly different than Draco Malfoy (which he’s most known for) and I do think he did a good job.

In conclusion, I want to mention that I kind of liked the end. It was odd, especially for a movie that felt more like build-up for 75% of it, but it was cool, different, and a bit unique (at least for me). If the whole movie was more like that, it might have been better.

  1. Aw, I'm sorry you were let down by the creepiness. If it were me, I'd probably be so scared since I'm not much of a horror fan at all! It would be interesting to see Tom Felton in a different role and I'm glad he delivered. 🙂

  2. I haven't even seen a preview of this one. I am sorry it didn't give you the adrenaline rush you were expecting! I still haven't watched the movie from last year with Daniel Radcliffe….I need to do that. Anyway have a great week. No luck finding the book, it is about impossible and when I do find it is so expensive. It is called Jane's Pink Blanket.

Ooh Tom Felton's in this? That's reason enough for me to want to watch it. 😀 I do enjoy creeping myself out (even if it doesn't take a lot for that to happen!) so it's a shame you didn't think this was very frightening. Thanks for the helpful review! 🙂

  4. I love horror films that scare the you-know-what out of me. This sounds a bit disappointing. I love good mysteries too, and they don't have to be scary, just well-plotted and not obvious. I do love Sebastian Stan, he's nice to look at. Ashely Greene is so pretty too. Thanks for the movie review because I hardly ever get to those anymore. My nose is always in a book or on a blog! Lol! 🙂

  5. I was nodding to what you said at the beginning about not being a horror fan and having an over-active imagination – I am EXACTLY the same!

So, to know that this isn't *that* scary means that I might actually give it a go!

  6. I just looked this up on Amazon. Because I love horror I almost signed up to be notified of its availability, but it has horrible reviews there. I think I'll pass, unless I DVR it in the future.

  7. I love horror/scary movies, and I have my whole life. My co-worker from Dish is also a horror fan, and we always get sucked into the “Paranormal Activity” movies when they come out. I was on the fence about seeing “The Apparition.” I’m glad I read this review and didn’t spend the $20+ to see this in theaters. Instead, I added this movie to my Blockbuster @home dvd queue, and when this movie comes out on dvd I will have it in the mail within a few short days. My curiosity has gotten the best of me, and although I’m not a fan of Ashley Greene, I will give this movie a chance.
