The Doomsday Mother: Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell, and the End of an American Family by John Glatt
I had already read Glatt’s book The Perfect Father: The True Story of Chris Watts, His All-American Family, and a Shocking Murder and I really loved it. It sounds weird to say you love a true crime book – because by no means is it an easy read. However, it did make me want to read something else from Glatt so I grabbed The Doomsday Mother, his latest release.
Does everyone remember the mom, Lori Vallow, who refused to produce her kids when nobody could find them? She kept saying they were fine, but where were they? Between her and her new husband, Chad Daybell, there was a lot to be suspicious about.
The two are currently in jail, awaiting trial on murder charges. Not really having a conclusive end for the book does make it a bit harder to read, but I liked getting more information about these two people and how they came together and people around them began dying.
I think the hardest aspects of this book to read are the deaths of Lori’s young children. I cannot fathom how parents are willing to let their kids be murdered and then just go on with their life like nothing is wrong. What happened to these children is just horrific.
Overall, I felt Glatt did a good job presenting the story and background of Lori and Chad. There was obviously a lot I didn’t know, and it just makes the case that more bizarre and twisted. Definitely an interesting read for true crime fans, but definitely think about content or trigger warnings!
Thanks for the review. Think I will enjoy this book.

It’s horrific. I’m glad you liked the book, but it’s definitely not for me. I know things like this happen, but reading it would just trigger nightmares for me.
Oh yeah, reading about the deaths of the children would be really hard. Thanks as always for sharing your honest reviews.
I will never understand parents like this, but like you, I find true crime fascinating.
I’ve not read any true crime before. I think I will have to pretend that it isn’t real…
Have a great week!

I do remember them but they had fallen off my radar. I’m not a parent but I can’t fathom anything about this. I sometimes read true crime but it’s not something I see out very often. I’m a little bit a scaredy cat about true life stuff!
Omg! What is wrong with people like Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell? They live their life like children are just an afterthought. No more important than some goldfish they flush down the toilet when they’re done with them! I’m happy those two are in jail!
I’ve not read much true crime but this sounds good, although disturbing.
I do remember this case. I haven’t read any true crime yet.
