You’re Invited by Amanda Jayatissa
BOTM book; all opinions are my own
You’re Invited is a wedding themed mystery, which honestly sounds perfect for me. After all, one of my favorite books is The Guest List by Lucy Foley. However, this book started off kind of strange for me. I wasn’t really sure what to make of the main character, Amaya. It felt like she was going to be another of those women in stories that are unreliable, but I was pleasantly surprised as the book went on that that wasn’t quite the case.
The book mostly takes place in Sri Lanka, which was definitely intriguing to read about, especially when it comes to appearances and how the wealthy are treated (as Amaya comes from this world, as does the bride, Kaavi). The premise of the story is that Kaavi is getting married to a man named Spencer, except Kaavi is Amaya’s ex-best friend and Spencer is Amaya’s ex-boyfriend. So when Amaya shockingly gets an invite to the wedding, she decides to go and comes up with three plans to get the wedding called off.
It probably took me about halfway through the book until I really got into the groove of it. Like I said, it was just a bit strange, and I wasn’t sure where things were going or if the mysteries were going to be super easy to figure out. I was curious enough to keep going though, and I’m glad I did, because it got much better in the second half. I don’t know that I’d say buy this one, but I think it would make a great library check out!
Library check out, good to know! It does sound like both an interesting and strange plotline, but I’m glad you ultimately enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing π
I still need to get to this one. Thanks for the heads up about not really getting into it until halfway! π
Sounds like sticking with it paid off… but halfway thru is a long time to wait for things to really start jiving.
I thought I heard this one was good, sorry it was strange for you!
This does sound intriguing, I like the premise, but it’s a pity it took so long to get into it.
This was my BOTM pick last month. I enjoyed The Guest List, too. Hopefully I enjoy this one as well!
This sounds kind of quirky but I’m glad it got better in the second half. I do like the premise and any similarity to Lucy Foley is good π
I was curious about this one when I saw it listed on BOTM but wasn’t sure. I don’t know if I have the patience to get to that second half of the book. Great review!
