Mini Movie Reviews: Captain Marvel and Shazam!

Who Run the World? Girls!

I saw Captain Marvel last Wednesday with a friend, and I loved it. I really enjoy all the Marvel movies, but this is one I can definitely seem myself re-watching in the future. Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers is played by the wonderful Brie Larson. This movie was a bit of a blast to the past, as it takes mostly during the 90’s (and the fun soundtrack clearly shows that!!). This was a “getting to know Carol” movie but it was also full of mystery and action. I love that while it’s a superhero film, it’s also about figuring out who you are – and where you came from. It’s about friendships and the family you make. And I love that! Highly recommended.

Say My Name, Say My Name

On Sunday, my mom and I saw Shazam! and it was so much fun. It’s a little over 2 hours long, but it kind of flew by. I didn’t know anything about Shazam as a comic book character going into the movie but I’m a fan. I actually thought that young Billy Batson would disappear when he became Shazam!, played by Zachary Levi, but thankfully, he can go back and forth just by saying – you guessed it – “shazam.” I was happy to learn this because I think Asher Angel, who played the young Billy, did a great job! I loved both him and his friend/foster brother, Freddy, played by the amazing Jack Dylan Grazer (you might know him from the most recent IT film). Shazam! was a really fun film, with plenty of humor, which I always love. I recommend this movie as well!

In Conclusion…

Captain Marvel and Shazam! have more in common than you'd think- movie reviews #ontheblog! #captainmarvel #shazam Click To Tweet

Both Captain Marvel and Shazam! deal with the families that you make, and not necessarily the ones you are born into, and I think it’s a great “message” for people watching. Plus, they are both action-packed, funny, and just downright fun superhero movies.

  1. I’m eager to see both of these, and I’m really happy to read you enjoyed them. In one of those small world kind of things, a friend of mine happens to have done orchestrations on the Shazam soundtrack! So I definitely have to start with that one lol

There’s not one person I know that saw Captain Marvel, had a bad thing to say about it, and the message is wonderful. I was a little iffy about Shazam, but I definitely plan to check that one out! Hugs…RO

  3. I’ve seen Captain Marvel & loved it! I have not seen Shazam! yet but was kinda going back & forth about seeing it but maybe I will have to.

    Thanks for the reviews! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I’d love to see them both! Waiting for Netflix. Brie Larson is everything. What a perfect actor for that role! Also, she seems to be the most when it comes to being a good person, too.

  5. Both of these movies are high on my list to see! I love Brie Larson and I’ve heard so much good stuff about Captain Marvel. I also adore Zachary Levi so I know I’m going to enjoy Shazam, it just looks so fun! I’m glad to know you liked them both!

  6. I don’t know much about Shazam but I LOVED Capt. Marvel, and I agree- i want to watch that one again. Probably my fave Marvel movie so far…

  7. Awww both of these based in your review sound a lot more interesting and complex than I would have thought if I had blindly purchased a ticket. The main actor in Shazam is adorableโ€”I know nothing about him but apparently he can sing and was just in the village, downtown NYC not too long ago. Thanks for sharing, Lauren!

I want to see Captain Marvel! My son is really into Marvel superheroes so I will probably watch it with him when it’s out on video/Netflix. I’ve never heard of Shazam before!

  9. I haven’t yet watched Shazam, but gah, it sounds like so much fun! I loved Captain Marvel and you’re right — they’re both stories abt the families you choose — good point!

  10. Of the two it is actually Shazam that really appeals to me. I shall have to google to see when its due to open here in the UK as I think Mr T would also enjoy it.

  11. I’m not a huge Superhero person, so my husband and son went and saw Captain Marvel. I didn’t know the movie and soundtrack has a 90’s vibe, though. That’s really cool and kinda makes me want to see it!

  12. I heard lots of great things about Captain Marvel, it really sounds like a good movie. I hadn’t heard of Shazam before, but it sounds like a fun one.

  13. I enjoyed Captain Marvel, and I LOVE that we get another female super hero… but it sadly wasn’t a new favorite for me. BUT the genre can be really hit or miss for me. So that makes sense. ๐Ÿ™‚ We finally caught up on that and the Ant Man movies so we are ready to see Endgame in a few weeks! ๐Ÿ™‚ XO – Alexandra
