Five Things Friday

Five things I’m thinking about, loving, or experiencing lately. Feel free to share what’s up with you in the comments.

One: Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

I’ll be in Florida next week and I cannot wait. It looks like the weather will be good, so *fingers crossed*. I could really use some pool time. I’m going with my mom and it should be a really nice, relaxing getaway. I could use one of those right about now! Now just to figure out which books to bring…

Two: Prodigal Son

The new show, Prodigal Son, premiered on Monday and it’s so good! A former FBI agent has a serial killer father (played by Michael Sheen) who ends up having to help him figure out cases. It’s kind of like an adult I Hunt Killers (by Barry Lyga), so if you’ve read those books, you might want to check out this show. A new favorite so far!

Three: Physical Therapy, Again…

I’ve been in physical therapy for the last month – lower back/left hip pain – and I think it’s definitely helped some, but I’m still not 100%. They did dry needling a few of those weeks – it’s kind of like acupuncture. It was nice to have something new tried, and it worked a little I think. In a couple weeks I’m having a branch block – it’s kind of like an injection to see if the pain is from the nerves in my lower back. I guess if the pain goes away, they will do something else to block those nerves. Yeah, I’m not great at explaining things– but we’ll see how it goes and I will keep you all updated if you like. Hopefully that will help a lot so I can move with less pain.

Four: Adult Summer Camp

I went to adult summer camp (just for women) for the first time last year. This past weekend I attended again with my sister and a friend. It was a lot of fun, and I definitely plan to keep going. I did a full 2018 Women’s Wellness Weekend review last year. Would you be interested in a review for 2019? I could probably get my sister and friend to share some of their thoughts too! This camp was through the YMCA, and I guess they have them all over the United States, so check out your local YMCA to see if something like this exists!

Five: The Bone Garden by Heather Kassner, illustrated by Matt Saunders – add to Goodreads

I’ve been a bit MIA when it comes to book reviews – I’m a little behind on writing them – so I thought today, I would share a mini review of this MG novel perfect for October/Fall.

The Bone Garden is about a girl named Irréelle, who was created into being by Miss Vesper. Irréelle loves Miss Vesper, as that’s the only “family” she has, but she’s really just being used to collect bone dust for a concoction that lets Miss Vesper reverse in age. When Irréelle meets another person like her, she realizes that what she thought she knew – and wanted – isn’t quite true. Like I said, this is the perfect book for the month of October or just Fall in general. I will say that the book was a little slow to start for me, but eventually the action picked up more and I found myself enjoying this quirky little middle grade novel. Plus, the book features illustrations by Matt Saunders which were really well done, and a fun touch. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy – as always, all opinions are my own.

  1. I think I’d like adult summer camp! I want to do a family camp too. I hope you have a great trip to Florida! I plan to watch Prodigal Son when I get a chance!

  2. Have fun in Florida! It’ll still be plenty hot down here next week so perfect for lazy pool days. Wave to me as you go by (I’m assuming you’re going further south than where I am). LOL I hope you continue to get relief from the physical therapy. Back pain is so miserable.

  3. I’m sorry about your pain. I had something similar for a few years. One thing that helped me was doing standing ab exercises. It help stretch those muscles. But I had to do chiro, massage and all that too. And I still relapse if I don’t stay on top of it.

have a wonderful time in FL! What part are you headed to?

  4. Oh Florida sounds so fun! I have heard about The Prodigal Son so I’ll have to check that out! I hope your back and hip pain gets better with the PT!

  5. Hope you have the best time in Florida, pack and read lots of good books and your back/hip can get some rest and heal up some. My physical therapy has been so good. If they haven’t used a TENS unit on you, might ask about it. And ultrasound massage. They have been such help for me.

  6. A vacation to Florida sounds perfect right now! I hope you get some great weather and time to relax. I had no idea there was adult summer camp. I’d love a review!

  7. Jen

I hope the Physical therapy works. I am so sorry to hear about the pain.

Have fun in Florida! That sounds like a blast 🙂

This book is now on my list 🙂

  8. Vacationnnn I am jumping in your suitcase, sorry to crash family time! Ha seriously though I hope you have a great time! My parents and brother are going to Florida next week too, which part are you heading to? Sorry that the pain has been so rough, I hope the vacation/rest helps that too! And the women’s camp sounds really fun! I’d definitely love to read about it!

  9. Sorry to hear that you’ve been in pain, but glad you are in PT and hope that helps. I keep seeing previews for Prodigal Son and it looks so good! I’ll have to remember to mark it on my calendar so I can catch up!

  10. I absolutely love the sound of a women’s only adult camp. I went on school camps a lot as a child and you never really get to appreciate the full experience because you’re usually too busy laughing at your cabin friends farting in their sleep. Sorry to hear about your back and hip causing you problems again Lauren, I hope that the nerve blockers work and you can finally find some relief my poor darling.

  11. Sorry about your hip and back pain – hope that the physical therapy can sort this out for you and you feel better soon.
Enjoy Florida and I can relate to the book issue! Always difficult to know how many to take and what books to pack 🙂
