Young Miss Holmes: Casebook 1-2 by Kaoru Shintani

Official Summary: Christie Holmes is a prodigy. At ten years old, she’s as familiar with
the sciences and classics as any older student at Cambridge or Oxford.
And her facility with logic is reminiscent of her uncle, the eminent
Sherlock Holmes himself. So, what’s a brilliant young girl to do when
her parents are away in India, leaving her behind in the care of maids
and servants? Solve mysteries, of course. Along with her giant hound
Nelson, Christie’s implacable curiosity leads her from one dangerous
adventure to another, often joining forces with Uncle Sherlock and
Doctor Watson on their famed investigations. Christie may look
pint-sized, but her clever mind is never to be underestimated!
Review: This is the first manga that I’ve ever read. For those that aren’t aware, Manga is a Japanese comic and you read the book right to left, instead of left to right like an English book. It was a bit weird reading “backwards” so to speak, but it was easy enough to pick up on.
As for the book itself, I really enjoyed Young Miss Holmes and would be happy to read her next book. Christie is Sherlock Holmes’ young niece and she is extraordinarily smart. Therefore, she likes to try and help her uncle and Dr. Watson solve some of their cases.
You read right from left, so Well Done reads first… |
The book includes five cases and each particular case is broken into at least two chapters. I thought they were all enjoyable, though one of them does lead a bit into the unrealistic. This doesn’t mean the solution isn’t believable, but another aspect of the story. Since the methods and outcome are still pure Sherlock, it didn’t bother me too much. Personally, I need to read more official Sherlock Holmes stories, but I had read the short story “Red-Headed League” so it was kind of fun to see it illustrated and with another character attached.
Overall, these are some fun stories with a mix of known and original characters! I wouldn’t hesitate to grab the next casebook (it looks like there is at least two more books about Christie currently available!)
Sounds fun! I don't read manga but I like the mystery aspect of this one

Ooh, I want to check this out!!
xx
Fun! I am not normally a manga person either
I love the drawings, so stinking cute!
Glad you liked this and would be willing to read the next one.
My daughter loves manga and all things Sherlock Holmes, so I'll have to let her know about this one. Thanks! 🙂
Very cool! I've never been a big Sherlock fan, but I'm thinking my son might enjoy something like this in a few years. Thanks for the review!
I still haven't read a manga either and I keep meaning to try one. This one looks good and I love Sherlock Holmes.
You know how I am with manga and graphic novels Lauren, but the mystery aspect of this one definitely sounds interesting! Thanks for sharing! <3

Oh fun! I've read a few mangas in my time (and enjoyed them) and many tales of Sherlock Holmes (and very much enjoyed them), so no doubt I would love this right? I think so 🙂 Thanks for putting this one on my radar, Lauren!
Oh my goodness what a cute cover, she reminds me of a character (Nancy?) in the tv series The Little House On The Prairie.
I can't imagine how I would get on reading backwards. Great review and this magna sounds fascinating.
What a cute idea to have Sherlock Holmes' niece as the protagonist. I think I'd like this! 🙂
I've read one Manga and didn't love it, though I think it was geared more for kids. Chi is what it was called and it was about a cat. Not sure if I will read another one.
I carry on listening to the news update lecture about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the most excellent site to get one. Could you tell me please, where could i get some?
