Local Tourist Blog Link-Up

Welcome to the first Local Tourist link up with myself and Dara from Not in Jersey. If you didn’t see our initial announcement posts, Local Tourist is a new link up where you can link up posts (they can be older posts too) where you share things you’ve seen or done in the basic area of where you live. The location is up to you – I’ll stick to mostly Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, as that’s where I live. If you are doing a new post and remember, we’d love it if you would include the above image or link to both or one of our blogs so others can find us! The link-up will be the last weekday of every month, so the next one is Wednesday, February 28 (so mark your calendars)!!

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that my sister bought me and her tickets to see the Cincinnati Cyclones as part of my Christmas gift. Well, we attended the game this past Saturday and while the Cyclones didn’t win, it was still a lot of fun! I’m not the biggest sports person but I love going to ice hockey games. There is just something really fun about them, and I can usually follow what’s happening. If you’re ever in the area and can make a game, I highly recommend it. There is fun music – a good game – lots of nice energy in the crowd. It’s almost like going to a concert, since you’re in an arena where they have concerts!

One of the things that I really love about Cyclones games is that they often have a fun theme. This past Saturday was the 25th anniversary of The Mighty Ducks, so the team had three different jerseys (like the ones in the movies) that they used throughout the game. There were also plenty of people in the audience with Mighty Ducks shirts and duck whistles! It’s definitely a fun sporting event for families and for almost any age!

On Sunday, January 21 I saw the play Faith performed at the Irish Heritage Center of Cincinnati. The play was directed by Michelle Crowley, a friend of mine and my sister’s (we’ve known her since high school) and it was such a fascinating play. It was also the North American premiere of the Irish play, so that was such a cool thing to witness. I’d never been to the Irish Heritage Center but it used to be an old school, so it was really cool to see how the rooms had been transformed. There’s even a bar in what used to be an old classroom! This is definitely where people hung out before and after the show.

As for the show itself, Faith deals a lot with mental illness and I thought the actors did a fantastic job showing that throughout. There were actually only three people in the whole play, which I feel is a testament to how well they did because it’s a lot less people to carry a show. Knowing the director is pretty awesome too since you can then talk to her about the play immediately after! I believe they are doing the play again in May, so keep an eye out for more information if you live in the Cincinnati area and want to see it!

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, then you know that my mom and I love to go to local library events (especially when we get to make crafts). I totally count this as a local tourist thing! Above you will see the painting I made a couple weeks ago. I think it turned out well. I wasn’t really sure for awhile there!

The above photo (with the pink) is the canvas that my mom made. I think it’s cute, and I like that our styles are a bit different – but still somewhat similar. We’re still trying to figure out where to hang these!

The above are some painted rocks I made last week at the library. Why yes, the top one IS Slytherin colors. I don’t really love the color I used for “Free” on the bottom, but in person, you can read it better, so I guess it’s not too bad!

This rock is the one my mom made. She actually made another but she’d promised it to my oldest niece, so I didn’t get a picture of it before we dropped it off. I really like the look of this one though – makes me think of leaves, or the reflection of them at least.

  1. The game sounded brilliant Lauren! I used to attend a lot of AFL games here, Aussie rules footy and with over eighty thousand people, the atmosphere was always electric. I always love seeing your art Lauren, it’s beautiful. Such a great feature and a reminder to explore our own backyards as well <3

  2. This is such a lovely idea – I’d love to do one of these posts next month.
Your library sounds great – the painting must have been so much fun for your Mom and you.

  3. What a fun idea for a post! I’ve been thinking about doing a hometown tourist post too so I’ll have to remember to link up next month! I really love the paintings that you and your mom did, how fun that you were able to do it at the library! I am going to a paint event with my mom later this month that I’m pretty excited about!

  4. I love love love this, and I absolutely ADORE playing sightseer in my own town. There are so many fun things to do if you just open your eyes wide enough and explore possibilities, right? Also that play sounds fantastic, and I love that the director availed herself to the audience after. What an incredible experience! PS: Love the painted rocks! I used to do these with my momma when I was younger <3

  5. You did so many fun things this month! I didn’t really do anything local touristy but put it on my calendar for next month so I can link up if I do! I need to check out what our library has to offer–I bet there are some fun events!

  6. What a fun linkup! That’s awesome that your local library has those events, I wish mine had some like that! And I’m with you on hockey games. They’re so fun and so much energy and I can actually keep up with what’s going on haha!

    • That’s awesome you’re exploring your local trails! I haven’t left the rocks anywhere, but they were sprayed with a coating so that we COULD put them outside. I might put one in a park nearby or something…but I’ll probably wait for the weather to warm up more!
