Review: I saw this movie the day after Christmas, and normally I would have written a review by now but I had other things that needed to go up and my co-blogger, Alicia, was supposed to start in the new year. Unfortunately, she’s been sick, so you’ll just have to keep an eye out for something by her soon! And now…some brief thoughts on Into the Woods.

I heard that someone saw the movie without being aware, so I’ll state it now: this is a musical. Now that we’re past that, I will continue by saying this is a great one. It’s definitely a film that I would see again. As for the musical, I’ve never seen it, but I’m quite curious now to see how the two differ.

I think the whole cast was fantastic. I love that they had a mix of well-known and lesser-known actors. Everyone had a great voice for their part though. I’m a huge fan of Anna Kendrick, and I think she has amazing voice, so it was wonderful seeing her play the flighty Cinderella who has never had to make a proper decision for herself before.

As for Johnny Depp as the Wolf, I think he did a really good job. Again, his voice fit the part, and I was a bit upset he wasn’t in the film that long. It makes sense though. There were two young actors in the movie that did a fantastic job, and they have such wonderful voices. You have Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood and Daniel Huttlestone as Jack (yes, Jack and the Beanstalk). Some of you may recognize Daniel as Gavroche from Les Misérables, the movie version.

Well, I said brief, didn’t I? I suppose I should end this here. Basically, I really enjoyed Into the Woods. There are some darker moments, but it’s also full of humor which surprised me (in a good way!) Yes, it feels a bit long near the end, but overall, it’s enjoyable from beginning to end.

  1. I really enjoyed this one too! I didn't know how it would end so I was pleasantly surprised by how everything worked out. Wonderful review! 🙂

  2. I am one of those crazy people that didn't realize this was a musical. As a family we went Christmas Day and the little ones didn't like it at all and grew bored. It was a long movie to not know it was a musical and be able to warn them before hand.

I did like it but I wasn't in love with it. I did like the characters just some of the morals of the story were less than stellar for a "family" movie.

  3. I didn't realise before either that this was a musical. I hadn't been hearing the greatest things about this movie before, but its always refreshing to get a differing opinion. So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

  4. It's not yet here in France but I think it's tomorrow or next week so I was really curious to know how it was. Now I'm glad to see you had a good time with it and I'm curious to discover the movie as well!

  5. I didn't know it was a musical so thanks for telling me. I like musicals live, but not so much as a movie. So I'll probably skip this until it falls into my lap or shows up on Netflix one day.

  6. I really want to see this movie… but I wasn't sure if it was movie theater prices good. I did go see the new Night at the Museum and that was fun. So I should for sure go and check this one out also!

  7. I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed this! My family didn't want to see over Christmas break so I'm going to see it with friends soon. Can't wait! Lovely review!

  8. I actually only seen this advertise last night and it looks spectacular! I love these dark and delicious retellings we see coming out at the movies and in YA as well. Definitely need to see this one.

    Thanks for sharing Lauren <3

  9. Heh, it's funny because I wouldn't have known going into this that it was a musical because I'm pretty oblivious to the movie and TV show world these days. But I'm quite pleased to hear it is and now I definitely want to see it! Especially if the voices and cast are so good!

  10. I recently saw this and completely agree with you about the cast being great! I wish they had stopped the movie at the point where you think they're going to and certain parts felt slightly rushed, but otherwise I really enjoyed it! (especially the Agony scene 😉

  11. I had no idea this was a musical It's been a long time since I watched one. Interesting! Sounds good, I'll be definitely checking it out when it hits the small screen, although I think I remember seeing on vudo. I could be wrong, it would be too early, I have to check.
    Thank you, good job 🙂

  12. Ooh I am glad that you liked this musical, Lauren! I saw the trailer when I was watching Mockingjay last night and I got really curious.

    Lovely review, girl! <33

  13. The Hubs and I saw this on Christmas Day, and neither of us had seen the musical prior to the movie. We loved it, and both ended up downloading the soundtrack (I got the full soundtrack, he got the highlights). I loved the cast, and it was just so much fun. I know some die hard fans of the musical were upset about some of the things left out or watered down, but it didn't bother me at all. I can't wait to watch it when it's released on video!

  14. Okay, I had no idea this was a musical either. Maybe so many people think that because there was no singing in the previews/trailers? At least the ones I saw. Now I'm wondering if Johnny Depp can sing LOL. Love Anna Kendrick. Nice review!

  15. So funny story… I enjoyed this but hated the ending. The last part with the giants and everything? Detested it. I just couldn't deal with all the things happening at once. However it's still a movie I want to see again. And the songs were amazing.

  16. I haven't seen the live musical either, and wonder how it compares. I did know it was a musical beforehand, but not much about the overall plot. I loved Anna Kendrick soooo much. But my favorite song was Agony with the two princes. Me, my mom, and my brother were literally laughing out loud during that song. I loved how Chris Pine totally ramped up the ridiculousness and cheesiness of that song. So funny! I also thought Johnny Depp did an excellent job, despite his briefness.
