Shrinking Violet by Danielle Joseph
Contest # 2
Book Out: May 5, 2009 (We’re getting close now!)

Summary: High school senior Teresa Adams is so painfully shy that she dreads speaking to anyone in the hallways or getting called on in class. But in the privacy of her bedroom with her iPod in hand, she rocks out — doing mock broadcasts for Miami’s hottest FM radio station, which happens to be owned by her stepfather. When a slot opens up at The SLAM, Tere surprises herself by blossoming behind the mike into confident, sexy Sweet T — and to everyone’s shock, she’s a hit! Even Gavin, the only guy in school who she dares to talk to, raves about the mysterious DJ’s awesome taste in music. But when The SLAM announces a songwriting contest — and a prom date with Sweet T is the grand prize — Sweet T’s dream could turn into Tere’s worst nightmare….

Contest: As Tere is exceptionally shy and finds solace and release in her music, this contest will combine those two. To enter, you have to leave a comment (with your email!) of a song that would suit someone who is shy.
Danielle Joseph is going to help choose the winner, based on your song, and if you DO win…

Prize:

First Place: An ARC of Shrinking Violet and Danielle will include your song on the book’s soundtrack, which you can find on her website:

http://www.daniellejoseph.com/

Second Place: A small Shrinking Violet gift pack (purple again!)– lip gloss, notepads, and violet gum.

Open too: International (this might be the last contest open to everyone for a little while, so take advantage!)

Ends: Saturday, March 21

This contest is part of the Book Room Reviews Giveaway Carnival:

Another contest (not part of the carnival) can be found in the left sidebar. It’s for Willow by Julia Hoban. Click the link for more details.

  1. the first one that comes to mind is express yourself thanks for the giveaway minsthins(at)optonline(dot)net thanks for the giveaway

  2. I’ve always been kind of shy, and I really like “Beautiful Flower” by India Arie because it is a song of encouragement for girls who are going through hard times; a song of empowerment, confidence and courage.

    akreese (at) hotmail (dot) com

  3. The first song that comes to mind is No Way by Pearl Jam, which is about learning to live without worrying about what other people think.

My address is amandagignac [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks!

  4. “From Where I am Standing” by Schuyler Fisk which is one of my favourite songs ever!
I doubt you know it but here’s the first verse-

    From where i’m standing
You’re the quiet side of the road
And i can’t stop looking at you
Your head is hanging trying to beat those goodbye blues
    I bet you’ll be fine
    I bet you’ll be fine

Great comp, Lauren (you know my email)

  5. I think this one would suit the song pick good because I interpret the meaning of it to be breaking out from your shy, keep everything inside, shell to something that is huge and wonderful and bold and free!

The song is: “Reachin’ For Heaven”
    Singer: Diana DeGarmo

    Thank you for the contest!

  6. Rue

Keep Myself Awake by Black Lab comes to mind. The “I” in the song just seems lost and unsure and kinda shy.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  7. I choose Invisible by Taylor Swift. Its a song about a girl who really likes this guy but he never even really sees her. He’s into someone else that’s not all that great and she just wishes that they could be together but her being so shy she knows it could never happen. I think this is an awesome song and it would be perfect for someone shy.

  8. Not to be, well, shallow – but I like to rock out to “Rockstar” by Miley Cyrus when I’m frustrated by my sometimes-shyness. 🙂

  9. I’m pretty shy too. 🙂

As for a song for shy people, I would say that Demi Lovato’s This is Me is quite beautiful.

Here are some of the lyrics that I think fit exceptionally well:

Always been the kind of girl, that hit my face. So afraid to tell the world, what I’ve got to say. But I have this dream right inside of me. I’m gonna let it show, it’s time to let you know. This is real, this is me, I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be now; gonna let the light shine on me. Now I’ve found who I am, there’s no way to hold it in, no more hihding who I wanna be. This is me.

    The lyrics are very inspiring/empowering.

  10. Ah, shyness. We all know what that feels like. I don’t know why, but ever since I read this post, I can’t get the song “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon out of my head. It’s not directly about shyness, and it’s not even about a shy GIRL, but it’s just a simply stunningly soothing song that hopefully makes listeners feel less alone.

  11. I think the PERFECT song for a shy person would be Wallflower by Priscilla Ahn. Here are some of the lyrics to let you get an idea of it:

“Do you see me standing there in the corner
I was alone, I always am at these big parties
    Watching you, watching everybody
    Wishing I was more outgoing
Wishing I was dressed up pretty
Wallflower, I’m not here, no one sees me
Wallflower, I’m by myself, please excuse me…”

    michelle.kuool(at)yahoo(dot)com

  12. I think the Counting Crows song “A Murder of One” would be great for a shy person. I sure loved it when I was a shy high school senior 😀

    Thanks!

  13. Dream, dream dream dream

When I feel blue in the night, and I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is
I’m afraid I have to disagree with momforever; Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” isn’t about being shy. It’s about being rejected and lonely because of a society that judges everyone by their looks.
Lennon’s “Beautifuly Boy” isn’t about shyness either. It’s John’s song about his then-5-year-old son Julian.

My first thought for a song about shyness was the annoying “He’s So Shy” by the Pointer Sisters. But it’s obviously about a guy.
The only song I can think of that might be appropriate for the thoughts of a shy girl (or guy) is the Everley Brothers’ song “Dream,” which is about a person who — for an unnamed reason — cannot have a real relationship with the object of her/his affections. Shyness is a possible reason.
Here are a few of the lyrics that might fit:

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine, any time, night or day
Only trouble is, gee wiz, I’m dreamin’ my life away

I need you so that I could die, I love you so, and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is

    Dream, dream dream dream, dream

  14. time by chantal kreviazuk:
    Time, where did you go?
Why did you leave me here alone?
    Wait, dont go so fast
Im missing the moments as they pass
Now Ive looked in the mirror and the worlds getting clearer
So wait for me this time
Im down Im down on my knees Im begging for all your sympathy
But you (Im just an illusion) you dont seem to care (I wish that I could)
You humble people everywhere (I dont mean to hurt you)
Now Ive looked in the mirror and the worlds getting clearer
Ill take what you give me. please know that Im learning
So wait for me this time
    I shouldve know better
I shouldnt have wasted those days
    And afternoons and mornings
    I threw them all away
    Now this is my time
Im going to make this moment mine.
(I shouldnt have wasted those days)
Ill take what you give me. please know that Im learning
    Ive looked in the mirror
    My worlds getting clearer
So wait for me this time

  15. Princess by Matt Nathanson would be a great song for a shy girl

“Oh princess, your ready for greatness. All edited and weightless, never more alive”

  16. I’ve always been a bit the opposite of shy — borderline loud but, I hope, not obnoxious! — but I would have to say my song choice is “Annie Waits” by Ben Folds:

    And so, Annie waits
    Annie waits, Annie waits
    For a call
    From a friend

    The same
    It’s the same,
    Why’s it always the same?

    Annie waits
    For the last time

    The clock
    Never stops, never stops
    Never waits
    She’s growing old
    It’s getting late

    So, he forgot
    He forgot
    Maybe not?
    Maybe he’s been seriously hurt…
    Would that be worse? …

I’ve always thought it was about a sweet, shy girl waiting for a guy who’s never going to show up. And, eventually, she realizes it doesn’t matter — she’s fine without him! 🙂 Better, even!

This book looks great. Thanks for the chance!

  17. H

A song for a shy girl? Hmm well, maybe Teardrops on my Guitar by Taylor Swift. It’s not exactly about a shy girl, but about one who can’t admit her feelings except to herself, not brave enough to tell the one she loves. She’s also comparing herself with other people which we’ve all done -‘the kind of flawless I wish I could be.’

Thanks for the cool contest =) I had fun thinking about it, much more fun than the just leave a comment ones.

  18. There’s this great late 90s band called Tonic and I always thought the song Lemon Parade was quite beautiful. Here are the lyrics:

I wish I’d seen you as a little girl
Without your armor to fend off the world
I would have kept you underneath my wing
I would protect you from everything

Make way for the lemon parade
    Make way for my girl
Make way for the lemon parade
    Make way for my girl

Did the boys all tease you when they had
    the chance
Always left standing when it came time
    to dance
Did you hide behind your books girl
Did you find your secret friends
    Always I’ll want you
    Always ’till the end

  19. I’m going to say Pretty the World, by Matt Nathanson

show me how pretty the world is.
Cause i envy the way that you move
show me how pretty the world is…cause i
want something just a little bit louder
show me how pretty the world is
cause you’re brilliant when you try
show me how pretty the whole world is tonight

  20. I think that “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Baily Rae has a soft wistfulness about it that would suit a shy girl, or maybe the empowerment anthem “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree.

Please enter me in your contest. The book looks like great fun.

  21. A song that relates to shyness for me is Mad World sung by Gary Jules. It was originally done by Tears For Fears, but Jules recorded a new version for the movie Donnie Darko. Anyways, the song seems to be coming from the perspective of someone who is on the sidelines watching everything that’s going on around them. In my opinion that is a major component of shyness that others may not see – by being shy and perhaps stand-offish a person is able to view the world and the people around them in a very different way than had they been part of what’s happening.

Thanks for the cool giveaway 🙂

  22. I’ve had the good fortune to stumble upon this post with my kid sister by my side. And while she is a lovely, talented, beautiful young lady, like anyone on the cusp of High School, she can feel a little out of sorts, not so much shy as lost in the shuffle. Her secret weapon for these occasions? Anna Nalick’s Shine. She says it makes her feel like a rockstar. 😉

  23. Sylvia

Whoever She Is sang The Maine. It is a really wonderful song and the song actually captures the essence of any girl.

  24. Hmm a song who would suit someone who is shy. I think I’ll go with Miss Invisible by Marie Digby! It was actually something true I think, according to Marie. It’s a very sad song, but at the end of it, you can tell that there is hope.

    Theres a girl
    Who sits under the bleachers
    Just another day eating alone
    And though she smiles
    There is something she’s hiding
And she cant find a way to relate
    She just goes unnoticed
    As the crowd passes by
And she’ll pretend to be busy
When inside she just wants to cry
    She’ll say…

Take a little look at the life of Miss Always Invisible
Look a little closer, I really really want you to put yourself in her shoes
Take another look at the face of Miss Always Invisible
Look a little harder and maybe then you will see why she waits for the day
When you’ll ask her her name

I suggest you LISTEN to this BEAUTIFUL SONG! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g5ZaV7ueAs

  25. You Picked Me by A Fine Frenzy

“Like an apple in a tree
    hiding out of reach
    I was difficult to see
    but you picked me”

    I love this song!

  26. Well, I am not entirely sure how the story goes but I think Teresa’s character is like the song Might Have Been by Kate Voegele.

I do hope I win because this book sounds like something I’d truly enjoy and I dont think it would be available here in my country. Of course, not to forget I’m guessing it will help me with my low self-esteem. He he he. Fingers crossed.

  27. As a shy girl, I would have to say that Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet” is the perfect song. It’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for, you know? Most shy girls are simply cautious. Once we are cool with people or our surroundings, it’s look out! We blow a fuse and the devil comes loose… and then shh, shh.

  28. I like the lyrics in “Shy Girl” by O-town!

    Shy shy girl
    Shy Girl
    Yeah, Yeah
    Standing with the wallflowers
Wishing you would’ve stayed at home
    You kick yourself for coming
When you’re standing there all alone
The centers of attention are busy making all their moves
    Oh Girl…
While all the guys are lookin
Then I got my eye on you
    Only you
You might think you’re nothing special
    You might be losing hope
    But baby don’t you realize
    How beautiful you really are

    Shy girl
    It’s written on your face
    A mermaid out of water
    Feeling out of place
    Shy girl
    Tryin to hide her blush
Caught you looking for a second
    Felt my heart rush
    Don’t run away
    Don’t be afraid
    Don’t be shy girl
    So beautiful
    Shy shy girl

    I’m moving in closer
Slowing trying to break the ice
    Shy shy girl
But it’s hard to get a lot on your downward glancing eyes
    Oh yeah

You might think you’re nothing special
But I’m about to lose my heart
    Baby don’t you realize
    How beautiful you really are

    Shy girl
    It’s written on your face
    A mermaid out of water
    Feeling out of place
    Shy girl
    Tryin to hide her blush
Caught you looking for a second
    Felt my heart rush
    Don’t run away
    Don’t be afraid
    Don’t be shy girl
    So beautiful
    Shy shy girl

Now I’m standing right in front of you
    I confess I’m nervous too
Girl you know there’s something going on
And not to give it a chance
    Would be so wrong
    Oh baby

    Shy girl
    It’s written on your face
    A mermaid out of water
    Feeling out of place
    Shy girl
    Tryin to hide a blush
Pretending that there’s nothing between the two of us
    Don’t run away
    Don’t be afraid
    Don’t be shy girl

    Shy girl
    It’s written on your face
    A mermaid out of water
    Feeling out of place
    Shy girl
    Tryin to hide her blush
Caught you looking for a second
    Felt my heart rush
    Don’t run away
    Don’t be afraid
    Don’t be shy girl
    So beautiful
    Shy shy girl

    Hey girl
    Don’t be shy girl
    Don’t run away
    Shy shy girl
    Oh baby
    I’m looking at you
    Come a little closer
    Shy, Shy
    Shy girl

  29. You’ve probably never heard of it, but I think the perfect song would be Snow Rain by Ueda Kana. It’s from an anime movie. It’s all in Japanese, so I have no idea what is being sung, but it’s just a beautiful song, and it seems to suggest shyness and then overcoming it.

Here’s a youtube video where you can hear it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kzaGcanolg
