Happy Monday! Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the book The Secret Bridesmaid by Katy Birchall. I definitely recommend this one. If you purchase from the affiliate link below, I get a small % of any sale at no extra cost to you.
I’d been seeing The Secret Bridesmaid by Katy Birchall around, mostly on Bookstagram, and I was definitely curious about the premise of someone being a professional bridesmaid. I’ve actually heard of people doing this in real life, so I was excited to check out a fictional take.
Sophie Breeze is a 31-year old who lives in England and she loves being a bridesmaid so much that she ultimately makes it a career. She’s a secret bridesmaid, in that very few people in the wedding party know she’s not really friends (or cousins, etc.) with the bride or groom. She’s kind of like a wedding planner, but she does it with the help of the bride or groom and obviously from within the wedding party and not outside of it.
The overall story in this one is about Sophie being hired to be a secret bridesmaid for someone who very much does not want her help…but Sophie is determined to win her over. For one thing, Sophie is a bit of a people pleaser and wants the bride to like her and for another, if this wedding goes well then it could lead to really big things for the future of Sophie’s career. I definitely felt bad for Sophie throughout as the bride sent her running all over the place and doing ridiculous things in the name of the wedding. I got why Sophie kept with it at the same time though.
I loved that Sophie really did grow throughout the book. She learned to believe in herself more, while also realizing it was okay to take the spotlight herself sometimes.
One thing that I loved throughout the book were the random emails or scenes with Sophie and her other brides. It kept reminding you that Sophie was juggling multiple weddings – but it also added a lot of humor! Some of these brides had some very interesting requests of Sophie – like dyeing her hair red to match the other bridesmaids. Did Sophie do it? Well, you’ll have to read to find out!
I don’t know that this book will have a sequel but I’d definitely read it! This was a very fun, quick read, and I liked Sophie a whole lot – as well as various secondary characters!

OOoooo this looks like a book I would like! The plot reminds me of that movie, 27 Dresses. With a little twist, of course. I’m adding it to my list!
This sounds fun, which is a huge draw for me
That’s really weird. I don’t think I’ve heard of such an occupation, but I guess it kinda makes sense if you’re a wedding planner. Sounds like a hoot!
This does sound fun! Imagine being a professional bridesmaid… that would be a job with lots of stories. 🙂

I didn’t know that was an actual thing! Kind of sounds like a nightmare job, lol! Bridezilla is a thing I know about . 🙂
