Show Us Your Books: November 2021

To be honest, I haven’t read that much since the last link up. There are so many books I want to get to this month, so hopefully I’ll have more to share in December.

The Initial Insult by Mindy McGinnis

This is a YA book with a lot of references to Edgar Allan Poe, especially The Cask of Amontillado. I did enjoy it, but I wasn’t too sure about the end…until I realized that there is going to be a second book. I think the second book will be even better. There is a lot of darkness and violence in the book, though it’s never gratuitously written. McGinnis is an author I’ve read before, and I really do love her books, so even if this one doesn’t sound interesting, I recommend giving her a shot!

The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson

* copy from Netgalley; all opinions are my own

I love that The Jigsaw Man features a woman detective (and one of color at that, which is something you don’t often see), and I thought the overall story of The Jigsaw Killer and their maybe copycat was really interesting. I read this one quickly, and I’m excited to read the next installment in the series. There are some typical storylines that you often find in books like these, but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.

The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun

I adored this book, and it deserves all the stars! Dev is a producer on a Bacherlor-type show called Ever After and Charlie is the new Prince, though he’s very different from past contestants. Dev is put in charge of helping Charlie get through the show…and it’s not long before they start falling for each other. I loved the romance in this one. I loved the mental health rep. I appreciated that love didn’t solve everything, and this wasn’t a “fall in love and your problems all go away” story. This book is full of heart and humor, and I definitely shed some tears. I can’t wait for more by this author!

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

This was a cute read! It was a bit of a slower read for me, even though it’s not terribly long. I loved that it features magic and I was a big fan of Vivi’s cousin. I see that this is Ex Hex #1, so I’m kind of hoping her cousin will be the feature of the next book. I did really love Vivi and Rhys, both together and apart. The Ex Hex has a lot of fun humor too, which is a positive for me. Basically, it’s a cute read, but it’s something I’d recommend borrowing over buying. I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for this one, but if you’re curious, check it out! I don’t regret reading it.

  1. I love Hawkins’ humor, so The Ex Hex was a big hit for me. I kind of want each brother to have a book, though I loved Vivi’s cousin too (but didn’t see get her romance with the mayor in that book?)
