The Weekend That Was: Happy Memorial Day!

a weekend recap

I love reading recaps of people’s weeks and/or weekends, but I don’t really share them a lot on my blog. However, the U.S. is celebrating Memorial Day weekend with three days off work (well, most of us have work off) so I thought I’d share what I’ve been up to so far!

The Weekend That Was #ontheblog - how are you spending your three-day weekend? Click To Tweet

Saturday, May 26

My mom, sister, and I started the day by going to Taste of Cincinnati which is a big food festival of sorts in downtown Cincinnati. A bunch of different Cincinnati restaurants – and food trucks! – set up shop and sell some of their most famous goodies. There’s also plenty of drinks, some non-food vendors, and even music! I tend to stick to the places that I know and whose food I already love and want more of, like the Kevin Bacon Ranch from a food truck called Hungry Bros. There’s also The Melting Pot (not just from Cincinnati), Tom and Chee (grilled cheese donuts everyone!) and more.

Saturday night, my parents, sister, and I finally saw the movie Life of the Party, starring Melissa McCarthy (we’re all fans of hers!) Her films seem to be really hit or miss for people – and I’m not sure what most people are saying about Life of the Party – but everyone in my family really loved this one. I thought it was a fun mother/daughter story…and it also shows that you don’t have to give up on your dreams, even if you put them on hold for years. It’s also really funny! Definitely enjoyed it.

Sunday, May 27

My parents, sister, sister-in-law, two nieces, and nephew all went to the water park at King’s Island – which opened up this weekend! We were all excited to be back. The water was a bit chilly when you first got in, but it didn’t take long to feel SO wonderful as it was really hot out yesterday. While we spent most of our time in the wave pool, we did take a couple turns on the lazy river which was nice. We’ll definitely be going back a lot this summer, though I am thankful to have a pool at my house because if you know me, I love chilling in the pool and reading a book. You can’t really do that in public!

Besides King’s Island, we all went out to dinner (with my brother – who was finally off work) and then my parents and I hit up the Dari Bar, which is a local place that has great soft-serve ice cream. Yum!!

The Last Word…

What about you? Did you do anything fun this weekend? Do you get today off work? (I hope so!!)

Before I let you go today, I wanted to share a GoFundMe page that a friend of mine set up. We’ve been friends for about 14 years now, and he could really use help raising money for some much-needed dental surgery that will help alleviate a lot of pain for him. If you’re interested in donating, or spreading the world, please check out his page here. It IS my birthday on Wednesday, so I get to ask for gifts, right? Well, here you go!! πŸ˜‰

  1. It sounds like you had a great weekend! A food festival sounds like so much fun. There’s an annual food festival in my city, but I haven’t been able to go. I’m hoping to go this year.

  2. I hope your friend can raise what he needs, dental issues are horrid.

You had me at food festival. I wish there were more of those around. I love a good feast and to try new dishes, it sounds like you all had a brilliant day. King Island sounds like the massive water park we have up in Queensland where all the theme parks are. I used to love floating around in the lazy river. Last time I went though, I forgot to cover up and ended up with second degree sunburn, blisters all over my back and shoulders. Completely ruined our holiday.

I love when you post about your family Lauren, you all sound like such a fun and loving bunch. Do you think they’ll adopt me? β™₯β™₯β™₯

    • Ah! That’s such a bad burn. I got burnt yesterday even though I kept putting sunscreen on, so I don’t know what’s up with that! I might need to get a new sunscreen type or something?

And yes! Come to KY and we shall adopt you into the fam. πŸ™‚

  3. What a weekend!! I mostly just stayed home. I had a lot of work to do for my freelance job, and then I wanted to spend some time reading and blogging πŸ™‚ I didn’t get to read as much as I had hoped I would, but overall it was a very productive weekend! πŸ™‚

  4. I can’t even imagine what a grilled cheese donut would be like! (Donutculture being basically non-existent here in Switzerland, though we do have lots of cheese πŸ™‚

Like you, I love seeing what people outside of the blogging world, and glad you had time to share. There’s nothing wrong at all with spending time at a huge food event! Getting to try new foods and meeting chefs is definitely my idea of fun, and glad you had such a good time. I adore Melissa McCarthy movies and her clothing line is pretty fabulous too. I like the message the movie gives too – that it’s never too late to give up on your goals and dreams. Hugs…RO

  6. I would LOVE to go to a festival centered around food. My town back in California had lots of that stuff, but there aren’t many restaurants where we currently live. But, hopefully, next year, with the move to Knoxville, I can start tasting ALL the things again, haha.

  7. What a fun sounding weekend! The Taste of Cincinnati sounds so fun, grilled cheese donuts??? Sign me up! I’d like to see Life of the Party. I agree her films can be hit or miss but I do love Melissa McCarthy!

  8. We took it easy, but I always attend a Memorial Day event, and we grilled for the first time this season! Impossible Burger for me, steak for them. πŸ™‚

  9. Oh that food festival sounds like so much fun! I hope to find something like that here so I can go this summer. I’ve heard good things about that movie too, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  10. We were in Cancun over Memorial Day weekend and thank goodness Tropical Storm Alberto was leaving right when we landed! Ha! Talk about luck! Your weekend sounds like a bit of what I like to do on normal Memorial Day weekends (when I’m not on vacation). We have a Greek Festival here that is a lot of fun. I love food festivals! The water park sounds nice as well. Cincinnati is not far from STL, I should plan a road trip there sometime with my family. It always sounds like there is a lot to do there!

I hope you had a fantastic time in Cancun! And yes, you should definitely come to Cincy someday. I’d be happy to share all sorts of ideas of places to go and things to see!

  11. Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend. I am looking forward to seeing that movie with Melissa McCarthy – she is one of my favourite actresses. The food festival sounds like fun. Glad you had a great Memorial Day weekend.

  12. Taste of Cincinnati sounds amazing, I love a good food truck! Heck food vendors in general ha ha. Sounds fun. and good luck to your friend as well- I hope the GoFundMe helps. Dental issues are the worst, and it’s nice you are supporting him. πŸ™‚ Oh and happy birthday!!!

  13. Hope you had a lovely birthday, my sweet friend! Also love that you got to go to Kings Island this weekend and that you had a blast! Need to know more about grilled cheese donuts, they sound amazing!

That sounds like a fun weekend πŸ™‚ especially the food event!

BTW, I love Melissa McCarthy – she’s hilarious.

I spent Memorial Day weekend in D.C. at a friend’s wedding and it was fun.
